thanks for the info - i haven't read ring mag for a few months. my question, just how the hell does "ugly, plodding style" indicate any kind of weakness? no real boxing fan cares about what looks pretty. niether does any fighter or trainer. i can agree on all other ponts though. The 2006 Ring Magazine Boxing Almanac lists these attributes for Nicolay Valuev.
Strengths: Size and strength; awkwardness; durability; friendly officiating in Germany
Weaknesses: Ugly, plodding style; defense; lack of one-punch kayo power
Prognosis: Short title reign for freakish curiosity once exposed against credible opposition outside of Germany.Comment

I've never seen one of his fights, just various pictures of that massive example of a human being but all I've heard is that he is a joke of a boxer, and relies soley on his massive size.
This guy is a pretty good case for a true Super Heavy division in my opinion. The small Heavies are just unable to match up with these super tall, massive heavies. As long as these guys keep coming out of the wood work, the Byrd's, Tyson's, Holy's, and Toney's of the world are going to be smothered by guys like the Klitchko's and Nikoli Val-u-mart or whoever it is i just typed a whole post on....

Valuev is at the overrated level in my book.
He's a decent at best heavyweight, that I barely even consider top ten material....hell that's pushing it.
His universal ranking stems from his undefeated record...but he's going to get beat soundly by a top tier heavyweight given they fight. And by top tier I mean:
WK, Peter, Byrd, or Rahman.
I don't think he'd beat any of the four, at any time.

I guess it denotes a lack of athleticism and speed.Originally posted by jthanks for the info - i haven't read ring mag for a few months. my question, just how the hell does "ugly, plodding style" indicate any kind of weakness? no real boxing fan cares about what looks pretty. niether does any fighter or trainer. i can agree on all other ponts though.Comment

He might UD Byrd by sheer size advantage, he might have a chance against Rahman, WK and Peter will KO him within 8 rounds.Originally posted by RunWithKnivesValuev is at the overrated level in my book.

Honestly, i think this guy could be a legend.
Disregard his lack of speed and power.
He needs a good trainer. He needs to get in shape. Imagine that 300 some pounds leaning against you - pushing you around the ring. He's big, but valuev fails to use his size as a advantage in the ring, other than using his long jab.
Freddie roach. E. Steward. This guy just needs a decent trainer and i think he could possibly by an ATG heavyweight. I mean, his punches must be heavy, and imagine that 325 frame pushing against your body. Nobody could deal with this guy if he actually used his size to his advantage, except possibly Wlad, but if Valuev learnt how to actually hit people instead of fumbling around the ring, i think he could knock Wlad out.Comment

It's been proven in the past, the only way to beat Byrd is to let your hands go. There is no other way.Originally posted by boxing2005He might UD Byrd by sheer size advantage, he might have a chance against Rahman, WK and Peter will KO him within 8 rounds.
I've never seen Valuev piece together accurate combinations on his opponents and set up power shots.
