If you want to talk about history of the WBO just go to the HW division. It was a stepping stone belt that everyone vacated to get a shot at the IBF, WBC or WBA strap. Tyson was undisputed champion & the WBO decided to come around. They had Francesco Damiani & Johnny Deplooy fight for the vacant belt. It never got any recognition until the mid 2000s. It was a lightly regarded tricket & the WBO wouldn't allow it's champion to unify so most vacated it until the mid 2000s. Corrie Sanders vacated it so he could fight Vitali for the WBC title. Joe Calzaghe, Michaelenski (or whatever his name was), Ottke all held the WBO belt when it was nothing more than a belt on par with the EU, NABF, USBA. It was a stepping stone regional belt that shot guys up the rankings in the world governing bodies.

I guess they all played their part in getting it where it's at today. Recognised by all major sanctioning bodies and is highly regarded in all divisions.
Look at Joseph Parker, you couldn't tell New Zealanders the version of the title he holds is worthless. It was a stepping stone.
