Comments Thread For: Jack: Ref Threatened to Disqualify DeGale for Losing Mouthpiece

NEW YORK There was a point during their fight Saturday night when Badou Jack thought he might beat James DeGale by disqualification. Jack revealed following their 12-round majority draw that he heard referee Arthur Mercante Jr. threaten to disqualify DeGale during an unspecified round if he kept either spitting out or otherwise losing his mouthpiece.

Yes the commentators mentioned if he did it a 3rd time he would loose a point, then it was pointed out how slick the corner man was in running out picking up the mouthguard without the referee seeing it .

Then he did it for the 4th time and the reff had some emotional words to Degale right at the bell I forget what round that happened in.

And then when waiting for the decision DeGale said something like Fck off when something was mentioned to him about the guard.

Dont be surprised to see this become a big issue in this.

Had the shoe been on the other foot and a Mayweather Promotions fighter did this we'd have hundreds of threads about it and everyone would be calling him a cheater .

Spitting out the mouthpiece saved Corrales against Castillo

Degale was definitely content to spit last night, wonder if that's a family trait his sister follows.

Most def. And Weeks took a point off so Chico put himself in a deeper hole for that move. But it was the only way he could recover and then possibily win by stoppage.

Last night I don't think DeGale spit his mouthpiece as a stall tactic. But if indeed it occurred 4 times, then DeGale should've been penalized a point at least. And that would've given Jack the win. Unfortunately, the ref blew it here, especially since he did warn DeGale after the second incident. This type of error shouldn't determine a fight outcome.

Boxing needs to modernize to minimize controversies like this.

I remember hearing the ref say something about a disqualification. I can't lie. I thought he should have gotten a point taken off. I understand that his tooth was missing and everything, but that comes with the territory. You can't keep spitting out your mouthguard.... With that being said, I would have been annoyed if DeGale would have lost because of a point deduction. That's lame. I scored it 114-112 Jack, but I'm completely okay with the draw. A lot of rounds were super close and I can see someone giving the nod to DeGale. I want the rematch to happen sooner rather than later.
