"I could probably give Jones a tough fight, probably the best fight he's ever had," said Calzaghe. "But I know my capabilities and unless I got paid the crown ***els I wouldn't want to risk it."

Are you serious?
You're talking about a guy who defended a lightly regarded WBO belt 21 times, with only 6/7 of those being mandatories.
You're talking about a guy who remained at SMW in the early 00's, even though he knew he couldn't unify with Ottke, and there was nothing else on the horizon at the time.
You're talking about a guy who starved himself to make SMW, even though he was coming down from around 190 pounds.
You're talking about a guy who was happy to fight guys like Salem and Manfredo in his 30's.
Not forgetting of course, that in 1999, he said he wasn't chasing Roy because he didn't want tough fights. As well as in 2003, saying he'd need the 'Crown ***els' to fight Roy because of the element of risk that would be involved.
Seriously man, open your eyes.
He was immensely proud of all of those WBO defences. He boasted about them in interviews.
He wanted nothing to do with Roy when he was anywhere near his best, but he was more than happy to fight him when he was badly faded in 2008.
Have you read his autobiography from 2007? He said that Roy was shot in 2004, which is the only reason Tarver and Johnson were able to beat him.
Clowning Roy in their fight was a disgrace.
The man was a scavenger.
He had no interest in Tarver, Pavlik or Dawson, but was more than happy to fight the shell of Roy. Nobody should respect that.Comment

I think the importance of the win has faded with Lacy's subsequent losses. However, the value of this fight goes far beyond the weight of the win. It's a highly entertaining fight, in which an awkward underdog with an shows unwavering courage and brings hell to the network darling. Joe was relentless in the way he pressured Lacy, physically and psychologically. From a technical standpoint, there's brilliant timing and footwork on display.
It's #1 on my list of fun fights to watch and I've seen a lot of people say it's one of their favorites as far as entertainment goes.Comment

Well the people in the States hyping Jeff Lacy up are the ones that made the fight what it was it's sort of like what some of the people State side have done with Andre Ward you've made Ward out as If he is the boogeyman and that he has this magical outstandingly high boxing IQ...
I think Ward is better than Lacy but Ward is definitely a hype-job like Lacy.
Calzaghe's biggest win is Kessler, who he had to figure out and beat in a hotly contested match. what did Ward do to Kessler? completely washed him.
Ward > Calzaghe... not debatable.Comment

You can't say nobody knew about jc, he'd been around ages.
He beat eubank. He koed Omar Sheila who took lacy distance.
If you are going to try belittle JC, and mamke him look small and insignificant by making him u nderdog. You have to suffer consequences and compensate JC by saying it was a great win.
Lacy's record and JCS record was there to see. But america thought they could underestimate JC. When there was no reason to.
Great win for jc.
I'm English. But I'm looking from the perspective of the U.S. fans.
Before he'd fought Lacy, he was relatively unknown in the U.S.
Only around 7 of his fights had been aired on Showtime, against the likes of: Rick Thornberry, David Starie, Omar Sheika, Mario Veit, Richie Woodhall, Will McIntyre, and Charles Brewer.Comment

That was a HUGE win for Calzaghe!!!...Nearly every American wrote hom off including myself...jaw on the floor as i watched him spank Lacy like he was his son...it was a masterpiece and so was his performances against Jones and Hopkins where he got off the canvas to outbox them and even "Out Jonsed Roy Jones" as Kellerman had put it...Calzaghe is alright with me...its not a stretch to say that he would have beat Ward if they had faced each other...
His fight with Roy was also a masterpiece?
"Out Jonesed Roy Jones"
A 40 year old Jones who was 3-3 in his previous 6?
A 40 year old Jones, who Joe had labelled as being shot back in 2004?
Ha!
I didn't realise people still took LSD nowadays.Comment

He will always deserve healthy credit because of the opinions going into it. That was the fight that made Calzaghe a name, and he was expected to lose.
It's not much a fight to bring up when discussing his place in history, though. Lacy was dreadful and the win really doesn't mean much in any historical sense. No one should really bring it up as proof of how good Calzaghe is. He has Hopkins for that.Comment

http://www.standard.co.uk/sport/i-am...e-6352495.htmlHe has no particular desire to test himself against the very best, such as WBC light-heavyweight champ Roy Jones.
Calzaghe added: "I'm not chasing after Roy Jones. Be honest, Roy Jones is a good fighter and I don't want tough fights, I just want big money"Comment
