This fight made Calzaghe a much bigger star because most expected Lacy to run over him. Lacy himself called Joe a slapper and insisted he would run through him. I must say that old Joe's "slaps" must be hard enough to keep an opponent honest because of all the talk about this, no one ever went in and walked through him. Considering what was on the line and the huge risk it was perceived to be at the time along with the rumor I've heard that Calzaghe had a sever panic attack right before the fight and then went into it anyway, just shows what Calzaghe is made of, which is plenty of talent and a lot of balls. Plus he made it fun to watch all twelve rounds. It's hard to beat the slapper on entertainment value.
that was the great thing about joe, he didnt coast when he was in front. he kept up the pressure and kept his punch output high. one of a kind.

      Same fighter before & after.

Kessler-Dominated by a 25 year old Andre Ward even though Ward wasn't even in his prime.

Hopkins-Dominated by Kovalev, KO'd out the ring by Smith, clearly out boxed by Dawson.

Eubank-Fresh off 2 losses, on the verge of retirement, severely weight drained (immediately moved to 190 afterwards)

Joe's resume in a nutshell, it's been badly exposed by superior fighters. Even Stevenson and Ward beat Bika up far more convincingly, which was a very close fight for Joe.
Dominated him with those 80 clinches and the numerous blatant head butts. Ward fans who give him credit for that fight are delusional. I'm a Wlad fan but the Povetkin fight was atrocious. Y'all should show some integrity and admit the guy cheated his ass off to get by Kessler in a fight that was nothing but a disgrace.

Obviously ward is a world level fighter but people made out hes like a once in a generation talent cause he won the average six. Was getting outboxed by kovalev who isnt really some pure boxer, most people presumed kovalev could only ko him cause ward was meant to be so skillful. Had people saying ward would beat calzaghe ffs, if that isnt overhyping a fighter i dont know what is.
He would have lost to Mikell Kessler If it happened in Denmark because there is no way in two shades of hell would the referee over there allowed Ward to disobey the rules like he did!

He's talented but he is allowed to fight in a manner that does not represent boxing, clinching, hugging, hitting and holding that is not pure boxing to me I mean I don't get where these so called holier than thou boxing fans are coming from they bashed Wladimir like hell and fair enough he held a lot and wasn't that entertaining but he gave the KOes, Ward fights more dirtier than Wladimir and gives less entertainment!!!

So why are these people -
        1 a fan of Ward
        2 a hater of Wladimir
Surely there has to be some sort of reason

I'd also like to say that Wladimir wasn't that highly rated but Wladimir mainly only held because he wanted to fight with distance he didn't want people up close with him, Ward gets up close and holds, Ward forces the clinching and dirtier antics a lot more.

There were fighters who brought more skill, but they didn't bring the Pride of Newbridge's activity. He gave the crowd action every time out. Definitely one of my favorite fighters to watch ever. His fight with Charles Brewer was a great little scrap. Liked his fight with Kessler a lot, too. And the Jones fight was classic with the clowning and putting his head Roy's chest. Was just too funny.

yeah, i dont like wlad and i dont like ward, dont like clinching and boring fighters full stop. Although people overlook that and make out ive got some vendetta against black fighters cause i dont like wards hugging style. People have got their knickers in a twist about him retiring but as far as im concerned, good riddance. Rather see kovalev v stevenson or beterbiev, or maybe even usyk at cruiser. He proved that hes the better fighter than ward, i dont give two ****ing ****s about what three american judges thought of a fight between an american/russian.

This is a very good point. Of course, it would make no sense for Wlad to fight on the inside against most of his opponents, considering his height advantage in most fights. So I can understand the reason he does it even though I don't agree with allowing him to do it.

In my opinion, the Ward fans, like fans of many other fighters, wear rose-colored glasses where he's concerned and will always make excuses. He's a dirty fighter period. Always was and always will. Also delivers little action and stinks up the joint most times. At least Wlad got knock outs and made for excitement because of his power. Ward gives us nothing, which is why he'll never be a huge star.

yeah he embarassed roy that night. roy couldnt lay a glove on him after the 1st round. Roy was a great fighter but joe was something else in terms of ring iq.

                  Is he officially retiring?

looks that way. Maybe he'll do a homecoming fight against a bum in front of 250 fans and a few seagulls in oakland, nothing confirmed yet though.

At the time it was a VERY impressive win. After the fact, not so much. Lacy turned out to be another overhyped guy that never amounted to anything.
