Wing Chun can be an effective style for short-range combat, if trained correctly (i.e. with combat in mind). The guy in the video below (Philipp Bayer) demonstrates this nicely (despite the fact that he only has one hand) - in particular from 1:58 onwards:



Is Wing Chun better than boxing? I don't think so, because Wing Chun struggles heavily with boxing's punch combinations, and struggles with bobbing and slipping.
