If the promoters & fighters feel the money being offered to fight on prime time TV is not worth it, the promoter can take the fight to PPV if they feel the fight could generate more money on PPV. The networks (HBO, Showtime, etc.) charges a fee to carry the PPV fight on their network. If a network decides the risk is not worth the reward as HBO did with Manny vs Vargas, they can refuse to carry the fight but the promoter can go through with the PPV as did Arum. Example, If a fight sells 300,000 at $60 = $18 million from PPV buys. Add an additional $5-12 million from the gate, another $2-5 million from sponsors. That total comes out around $25-$35 million. Now for the subtractions, fighters guaranteed fees plus PPV upside, Network fee: 7 - 10% of PPV buys, Promoters fee: 20 - 30%, Advertisement, Site fee, Promotional tour, Miscellaneous fees, etc. As you see, there's a lot to consider from all sides. The bottom line is how much money each person can make & is it worth it! When fights are placed on PPV, the promoter fronts the guaranteed purses while the networks only charge a set fee to carry the fight on PPV. When a fight is shown on prime time TV, the network fronts the guaranteed purses.
You forgot the cable providers cut which is 40-50% of the PPV

Because boxing is trying to maintain and use a old format that doesn't work for them anymore. How the *** is all the Cord Cutters and people going to strictly Streaming Service suppose to ***ing Order PPV's? This is question NOBODY has Answered and I think it needs to be brought up at Boxing Pressers! I don't have DirecTV no more I use Playstation VUE and I don't have NO CLUE how to order Boxing PPV's without Cable or DirecTV.

The Sport is not prepared for the future at all with with UFC they have their App setup where you can order from them direct, you can even order it at watch it on youtube. Boxing don't have NONE OF THIS setup going into the future so yes Numbers will continue to decline big time and I say GOOD that is probably the only way the sport of boxing will pick itself if the money gets low the the leeches fold and start to bow out from the sport all together. Let is Crash and Burn!

F#ck that's a weird ass comment by Lampley considering HBO is the PPV king. HBO executives must have finally had that meeting with HBO boxing about them getting out of the boxing business in the next 2 years to get MMA (UFC or Rizen would be my guess) on HBO to get those sexy ass younger viewers.

Been a lot of super weird **** with HBO lately. Damn near there whole upcoming schedule is PPV. Nelson was talking about he'd be happy having the same year they had last year which is one of the worst years in HBO boxing history. And now this.

That Postol vs Crawford card wasn't expensive. Did you notice how many fights were able to be made once they cancelled the Canelo December fight?

The small budget is a tired excuse. Nelson needs to do a better job of allocating the budget.
