  • First Qtr of 2017 looking nice

Here's hoping this is a sign of things to come after a lackluster overall 2016. This should also be a sign that PBC via Showtime largely is looking to make some important fights for fans & their fighters this year with most of the fun &/or competitive matchups of the first quarter of 2016 being Haymon fighters or PBC or PBC affiliated cards. Regardless of all that political bs I think many of these fights will be good &/or fun fights for boxing fans to enjoy.

    Jan. 14, Brooklyn, NY, Showtime

James DeGale (23-1) vs Badou Jack (20-1-2) - for the #1 spot at 168 title
Jose Pedraza (22-0) vs Gervonta Davis (16-0) - too much too soon for Davis?
Ievgen Khytrov (14-0) vs Immanuwel Aleem (16-0-1) - decent prospect fight

Jan. 28, Las Vegas, NV, Showtime

Carl Frampton (23-0) vs Leo Santa Cruz (32-1-1) - rematch of an entertaining & competitive fight last year
Dejan Zlaticanin (22-0) vs Mikey Garcia (35-0) - great test for Mikey

Feb. 2, Tunica, MS, Fox Sports 1

Sammy Vasquez (21-1) vs Luis Collazo (36-7) - great fight to see where Sammy is at
Ryan Karl (13-0) vs Eddie Ramirez (15-0) - decent prospect fight

    Feb. 11, TBA, Showtime

Adrien Broner (32-2) vs Adrian Granados (18-4-2) - fun fight
Gary Russell Jr (27-1) vs Oscar Escandon (25-2) - solid matchup
Jermell Charlo (28-0) vs Charles Hatley (26-1-1) - solid matchup

Feb. 25, Frisco, TX, HBO PPV

Miguel Cotto (40-5) vs James Kirkland (32-2) - kinda bs fight, but Kirkland is still too entertaining to miss
Guillermo Rigondeaux (17-0) vs Moises Flores (25-0) - biggest challenge for Rigo in awhile

    Mar. 4, NY, Showtime

Keith Thurman (27-0) vs Danny Garcia (33-0) - fun fight
Erickson Lubin (17-0) vs Jorge Cota (25-1) - great test for Lubin

Mar. 18, New York, NY, HBO PPV

Gennady Golovkin (36-0) vs Daniel Jacobs (32-1) - fun fight

The bronzer fight is feb 18th

You left out 3 fights on Jan 28th. Showtime triple header includes lee Selby. HBO double header. Vargas main event, Miura co-main, they both win, rematch of a fight of the year.
Also with the HBO ppv in feb and March, highly likely that HBO puts on something good a week after the cotto fight and a week after ggg fight(salido vs Loma is rumored)

Yea I saw the Broner fight got switched to the 18th but forget & was just going off of the boxrec current schedule.

I didn't leave out anything I find interesting. Idgaf about that HBO Jan. 28 card of A sides that should be fighting each other now instead of HBO putting them against also ran mfers. When they fight each other again later this year they'll be on my list. And that Selby fight holds lil to no interest to me. I think I'll be more interested in the Wilder HW title fight vs that no name Polish or whatever country guy than the Selby fight.

For the most part I was trying to list fights that I feel like there is a reasonable expectation that either guy could win or if nothing else it'll be a fun ass fight to watch if its not quite as up for grabs. And I don't really think that HBO card or the Selby fight qualifies.

Yea I'm not really speculating on what could happen with the first quarter. Just noting whats on tap at this point officially. Hopefully that Loma vs Salido fight gets added to the HBO schedule as I for sure will be looking forward to that fight.

Some good fights no doubt and hopefully no cancellations. But all these fights need to lead on to bigger and better fights in the remainder of the year. Jack/DeGale winnier is arguably the top guy at 168 but considering it should have happened at least a year earlier, we need a quick turn around and the winner v Ramirez, Groves or even Smith.

LSC v Frampton is a foregone conclusion imo but its still a damn good fight. Once Frampton wins we need him to face Selby or Valdez.

Garcia v Thurman should be a stepping stone to Garcia, Khan, Brook and/or Bradley. With all but one of those guys with Show/Haymon there should be no more excuses.

And once GGG obliterates Jacobs there should be no delay for the Canelo fight.

The first quarter of 2017 needs to set up for an even bigger second half of the year with unifications taking place throughout.

Those 2 Jan cards in particular are very good. Living in the UK it can be difficult staying up for a fight you want to see when you know the undercard is so bad it'd make you fall asleep even in the middle of the day.

Eff, I think you're underestimating the Jan. 28th HBO card. Yes, the SHO card has the more significant match-ups, but Vargas and Miura are hardly "A-side" material and their opponents aren't that bad.
