  • Are Uppercuts used often enough these days?

Obviously the Charlo uppercut on Williams was impressive. I see some fighters use them, but I know many who don't seem to ever throw an uppercut. It is probably the most dangerous punch in the sport. Now I know it has to be thrown when the right opportunity is there as it perfectly was for that fight. However, I'm wondering if we see enough uppercuts from the modern fighters. Any thoughts?

I think we have lesser sluggers who go toe-toe and more tall rangy fighters these days who stay in range & box.. It is certainly not a lost art but guys have realized that the longevity in this sport means you dont go out on an all out toe-toe war, because the shelf life is short for those kind of fighters..

Interesting point. I'd have to point to the Thomas Williams-Edwin Rodriguez fight earlier this year, though. That was total reckless abandon, especially on Rodriguez's part.

Those are all great. I like head butting myself. With Hopkins gone, we're in real trouble...

good thread, Yeah cant say theres that many who throw a good uppercut these days. Used to love juan manuel marquez throwing the left uppercut with a straight right after it. Dont think theres that many good combo punchers in the sport full stop at the moment.

Dude, now Marquez had the uppercuts! I didn't even think about him, but man yeah. I always liked Barrera's half-hook, half-uppercut he did but Marquez threw a ton against Juan Diaz which was one of the best fights of the last decade. He also stopped him which could tell you something. I may go back and watch the rematch to see if he threw as many uppercuts then and compare the two...
