According to the drug's designer, Ivar Kalvins - chair of the scientific board of the Latvian Institute of Organic Synthesis - it was created to increase the body's oxygen-carrying capacity.

Because of Afghanistan's mountainous terrain and the need to carry large backpacks, Soviet soldiers would take meldonium to increase their endurance in the oxygen-reduced air.

Also......peds are ever improving while doctors try to catch up to ban them. they ban one here comes another (legal one day banned the next) it's a never ending game. povetkin knew full well that meldonium increased the blood flow to his body & helped him train harder longer & made him overall A better athlete. because if what you're saying was the case "theres no improvements" he wouldn't have took it

    common sense.......

Russia must really not like Povetkin. They didn't protect him against Wlad, and he popped twice for PEDs before fights in his home country this year. Putting in no effort to cover things up for him.

Hey come on guys, it was only banned in January 2008, maybe he just took it before the ban and so it was still detected in his system just like his other failed test.

                    • ... They should ban those Russians fighting in Russia... there was no pre-fight drug testing protocol for that fight in Russia between Lebedev and Gassiev, as well...
