Between HBO and Showtime, there is also an on-air talent gap, and a production talent gap. HBO simply looks cleaner and elegant due to their production. Also, their commentary team is more well known and Kellerman is on radio, satellite, ESPN, etc. People who aren't boxing fans know Kellerman and listeners will more than likely watch a show that he talks about. Showtime doesn't really have that. I like Bernstein and Jim Gray, even a special place for Mauro because of Pride and Strikeforce, but I'm sure most people outside of boxing folks think Paulie is a douchebag.

The HBO formula just gives viewers a more comfortable watch from better production, better marketing, better names, and even tradition. I really don't see Showtime ever surpassing HBO. They'll be on par at times, but always just a level below. Kind of like WCW and WWF back in the day. Both good, but WWF was always the king.

Showtime was neck and neck with HBO before Haymon tanked Showtime in 2014 with his spree of money grabbing tune up bouts.
real talk. can't use the subscribers excuse. Just 2-3 years ago Showtime were getting close to 1m viewers and drawing neck and neck with HBO Boxing. Now 2016 and no dramatic shift in the gap between HBO subscribers and Showtime in 2014 compared to 2016. Showtime hasn't lost subscribers overall they just lost more then half their boxing viewers. And the line in the sand when their ratings fell off a cliff is the Golden Boy split and when Haymon created PBC. That has crippled Showtime Boxing.

Broner got 1m this year on Showtime, so they still have that many subscribers that would potentially watch boxing. They've just diminished the interest people have for their programming.

Wilder only got 500k vs Szpika, where the exact time the year before he got 1.2m vs Stiverne. Hell just 2 years ago Danny Garcia got over 800k for Salka, I wonder if Garcia/Thurman would get that on Showtime now?

I worry that HBO is reluctantly following in their footsteps. With so many fighters tied up in the PBC, HBO's been forced to use scrap opponents. Fights like Crawford/Molina, Hopkins/Smith, Luis Ortiz will gradual kill their audience as well.

Garcia-Thurman is the only one that will do well (it SHOULD do well). Frampton/LSC might do well since Vargas/Berchelt aren't big names. If HBO manages to do better than SHO on Jan.28th, I'll be surprised.

Haymon has been nothing but death to whatever he touches so far.

Broner fought on Spike this year not Showtime and last time he fought on Showtime he did I believe 500k viewers in 2015, half of what he used to do on Showtime pre PBC.

Like anything else in life, consistency is the key, while HBO is putting fights weekly, Showbox haven't done anything in months, they're basically gonna have to get ball rolling now, cause HBO has NOTHING scheduled till the Cotto/Kirkland and that's PPV.

Mayweather was fighting twice a year. If you don't have Showtime and order PPV you get Showtime free for like 3-4 months.

Showtime was getting it's best numbers between 2013-2015.

HBO: Barrera/Shabranskyy and B-Hop/Smith to close 2016, and one card in Jan 2017 where they compete with SHO. SHO has three cards in January: DeGale/Jack, Framp/LSC, and a ShoBox. DeGale and Jack were built on SHO, but they took too long to make the match-up and the ratings will probably reflect that.
