Comments Thread For: Roach: Pacquiao-Crawford Possible, I like Pacquiao-Canelo Better

Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach is sizing up the potential 2017 opponents for WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao (59-6-2, 38KOs). Last month Pacquiao returned from a short-lived retirement and defeated Jessie Vargas for the WBO belt.

    Canelo's a full fledged MW

    Pac is a small welter

I'm a huge Pacquiao guy but I'd fear for his life against Canelo at this stage of his career

I could see why Arum would want to. Manny's 38 and Arum's ready to cash him out. Doesn't matter if he dies in the process.

Roach though, I don't think he's in it for the money. Roach lives pretty modestly from what I can tell (24/7's, etc.).

I really believe that Freddie thinks that's a winnable fight. But dude, there was talk, even from Manny if I recall correctly, that the Margarito fight took a lot out of him. Like he left some his career in the ring that night. He even said it himself that he'd never fight somebody that big again. Canelo may not be quite as big as Margarito but he's still huge compared to Manny -- and he not only hits harder than Margarito -- he's a full level above as a fighter as well.

And that was an in his prime Pacquiao.

This is the 38 year old version...

Yeah that was a brutal fight
Everytime PAC got caught on the ropes you could see he was uncomfortable
Even though there was never a fear of him being knocked out it was still hard to watch
Fight should never have happened and neither should this
I don't think PAC would come back from the other side this time

Canelo would KO Pac, too damn small. At least Crawford is more his size. Roach just knows it is time to cash out on the Pacquiao train and wants to get the most he can for Manny's last fight cuz both kick hiss ass. Canelo too big and young and Crawford is simply better than Pacquiao these days

Canelo is definitely bigger than Margs. Margs was still at 147 for much of his prime. Canelo was immediately 154 after teenage years basically. Margs also was the same size as Cotto. Canelo was way bigger.

You really think Roach is just thinking about the money? I doubt it. Like I said before Roach appears to live pretty modestly anyway, and he already has more money than he knows what to do with from all the huge fights he has been involved with. And I believe the dude when he says that he views Manny as a son. You don't go to battle with someone that many times and not have a deep bond. Arum though, different story. Arum's a businessman who would sale his own grandchildren for the right price.

I honestly believe that Roach thinks the Canelo fight is winnable. He envisions Manny just moving all night long and outpointing Canelo en route to a decision.

Personally though I think that's pretty delusional -- at some point Canelo would get to him and unleash. Guys like Cotto & Margarito were able to get him cornered on the ropes...what happens when a squarely in his prime Canelo gets that opportunity? And against a 38 year old Manny Pacquiao who was knocked out in horrifically brutal fashion in recent memory?
