Comments Thread For: HBO, Showtime To Televise Shows Simultaneously on January 28

HBO Sports announced Friday afternoon that the network's first boxing offering has been scheduled for January 28. That "Boxing After Dark" doubleheader will feature Francisco Vargas (23-0-2, 17 KOs), the WBC world super featherweight champion, in the main event. Vargas will defend his 130-pound championship against fellow Mexican and interim WBO super featherweight title-holder Miguel Berchelt (30-1, 27 KOs) in what should be an all-action, 12-round fight at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, California.

First thought that came to mind was why 'compete'. Might just be unfortunate that both cards the same night, but given there are a limited number of eyes on boxing, would have thought both networks would prefer have two cards like this on different nights so each gets more eyes on the show (and that promoters would prefer this too).

nothing new, next week their 2 cards airing the same time too hbo with crawford molina and showtime with mares cuellar. But not surprising boxing is filled with greedy idiots who just trying to fatten their pockets while the getting is good so they running it into the ground and milking it before they cant no more./

HBO decided a while ago to not invest in boxing anymore. When I got into boxing 20 years ago, no one had Showtime for boxing and every boxing fan that could afford it, had HBO. There wasn't even a question about it. Now Showtime is the big dog, and HBO is just keeping the customers they had for decades.

Which brings up point number 2. This is incredible b.s. Haymon had a golden opportunity to turn boxing back into a mainstream sport. Instead he put on a few good fights (you can count them on one hand), a lot of look-good fights, and some cards that had no business being televised. Now he is about out of money and so all the decent fights are back on Showtime. These investors shoulda put me in charge. I would offer top fighters top dollar to face another elite fighter. I would have boxing on the same channel, the same night, at the same time every week. espn or spike would gladly be the channel. I would offer Danny Garcia $10,000 to fight Vargas and over a million to fight Thurman. If he would be happy with $10,000 and no chances then whatever, that would be his choice. He wouldn't be raking in piles of money for facing bums though.

But now that the money is gone, ole Al just calls it PBC even though it is the same boxing Showtime has been showing for a decade now.

I know Haymon is an advisor and not a promoter, but Charlo and J-Rock need a promoter too! A week before a great match-up, one of the best of the year and no one, absolutely no one, is talking about it.

Mr. Roid and whoever else writes for here- how about some coverage for these two??? Everyday there are a couple articles about how G or his trainer said this and that and yet he fights Wade and a WW. Then we have two undefeated world class fighters going at it and it is apparently some side note. This is a disgrace. Boxing is relegated to the back pages and the other section because when there is a good fight, two top up-and-comers going at it, no one even mentions it!!! I know the G-tards love them some Dirty Sanchez but how about some coverage for one of the best fights of the year?

Both will get low ratings. Even when one does more than the other it wont be by much. Whats the point?
