Because he was fighting Sugar Ray Leonard and it was a 7up commercial.. That was the fight that crossed Duran over to the mainstream. Before that he was not a mainstream star in America for casual boxing fans.

He speaks English and understands it, but it's clearly a distant 2nd or 3rd language, and he chooses not to speak it. He spoke English with an interviewer, and understood the questions, without he interpreter that was standing beside him. It wasn't robotic, scripted English, like Triple G .

He has 8 pro fights and only been the main event in two of them I'm pretty sure his ratings will start to go up the more he fights. Also I've noticed a lot of UFC and Mma fans seem to like him for some weird reason.
