Comments Thread For: Arum: Gary Russell is Too Intelligent To Want Lomachenko Again

LAS VEGAS Bob Arum would be fine with putting Vasyl Lomachenko in the ring with Gary Russell Jr. again. Russell has long said that he wants another shot at Lomachenko, who beat him by majority decision in June 2014 to win the then-vacant WBO world featherweight title in Carson, California. The 2008 American Olympian told BoxingScene.com earlier this year that working with a since-fired strength and conditioning coach caused Russell to have trouble making the 126-pound limit for the Lomachenko match and adversely affected his performance.

I don't believe Russell really wants Loma either! If he did, it would have happen by now. Who has Russell faced since losing to Loma? I think Russell likes to hear himself talk about facing Loma but he's not doing anything to make that fight. Loma will embarrass Russell worst than the first time. Its clear Russell is just blowing smoke in his interviews.

I wouldn't mind seeing a rematch the first fight was a really highly skilled clean fight. Now both Russell and Loma are better wich should make for an even better fight

Russell is another fighter with a totally unrealistic concept of his own value. He needs to humble himself and focus on building right now. Santa Cruz and the winner of Cuellar-Mares should be his immediate targets

Lets see if Russell will speak up now that Loma fight against the Axe Man is over! Its funny how a lot of these fighters speak out when a guy has a fight scheduled but gets quiet when the guy he's calling out has nothing scheduled. Where's Danny Jacobs?

Whatever Bob, but Russell has only had 3 fights since Loma (with nothing currently scheduled). Loma has had 5.

Doug Fischer again, '...fighters don't get better by not fighting....'.

Lets focus more on what the smart thing would be for Russell, to get more active - target 3 or 4 fights a year, and THEN consider Loma again.

Russell took it to Loma for the full 12 rounds and gave it all he had. In light of the Walters fight, that needs to be better appreciated now. Sure Loma schooled him, but Russell's performance is looking better and better over time.

Lisa Giampa's scoring should not be forgotten - another judge card that had the potential for causing a travesty. Just imagine for a second if Adalaide Byrd was scoring that fight too (Russell/Loma), fight would have been judged a draw for crissakes. Byrd gave Walters the 6th round in the Loma fight, if that's all you have to do to win a round v Loma in her eyes, she would have given 10 or more to Russell.

DEMOTE THESE JUDGES NOW. THEY AREN'T COMPETANT.

I wouldn't necessarily object to a rematch but I honestly don't see the point. The only reason why people are even entertaining it is because GRJ claims to have "overtrained" or something like that and frankly I'm not buying it. If he was "tired" like he claims it was because he was getting ripped to the body and missing with most of his punches. Now I give GRJ all the credit in the world for taking such a beating and knowing he was outclassed without quitting, but I don't like that he's trying to throw dirt on this fight by making up some bullcrap excuse.

I don't see what would be any different in the rematch other than it would be at a higher weight class which I think benefits Loma.

I like Russell Jr, i think he's a good fighter. Him and Frampton are the stand outs for me in that division.
He'd never beat Loma though IMO, plus there is some good fights to be had at 126 involving him.
