GGG does the same exact thing. Kovalev does it as well to a lesser degree. It's called probing. In boxing in order to beat a faster fighter, you have to throw with them.
Vasil is keenly aware of that so he is throwing these throw-away shots to see if you'll try to counter them and go on top and by doing that he is in great balance to defend and counter your counters. When you stop reacting to his throw-away punches then he steps in and hits you hard.
I don't think I've seen anybody else do that.Comment

GGG does it from close range and when he's cut off the ring. Good call, he does it exactly the same but mostly when the opponent covers up. Vasil does this at any range, any angle, outside, inside and it's a big % of his offense.Comment

I think against a busier, gutsier fighter or a slicker counter-puncher it could leave him unnecessarily open. I'd prefer if he just did a normal feint in those instances rather than actually committing to a throwaway punch
Gvozdyk does the same thing but slightly slower and slightly less refined and it leaves him dangerously open at times
I love the innovations Anatoly Lomachenko brought to boxing, but I think in the pros you have to dial it down a bit and be more conservative. The textbook is the textbook for a reason. I think, of the 2012 Ukrainian class, Usyk actually looked the most "pro" in his last fightLast edited by NEETzsche; 11-28-2016, 10:49 AM.Comment

That's something Golovkin does well too. He taps with half-hearted shots to make opponents react and then wallops them with a hard shot.
EDIT: Already covered, lol.Comment
