Comments Thread For: Nicholas Walters: Long Layoff Won't Bother Me; I'll Win Anyway

LAS VEGAS Nicholas Walters hasn't fought in 11 months. That's not an ideal activity level when you're headed toward a daunting challenge like Vasyl Lomachenko, Walters' opponent Saturday night at The Cosmopolitan (HBO; 10:35 p.m. ET). If ring rust is a concern for the 30-year-old Walters, though, the former WBA featherweight champion has hidden it well during the buildup for the biggest fight of his eight-year pro career.

This is going to be one helluva fight. Loma may be the slicker fighter but he's got a massive reach disadvantage to overcome. Walters is a spaghetti-armed freak with good hands and ****ing power. It'll be interesting to see how Loma can get to Walters without taking big shots.

I read an analysis somewhere, which, like all analyses, can be debatable, but it addressed the question of whether the top guys in the past were better than today's top guys.

It certainly feels that way, maybe rose-tinted glasses, dunno, but hard to imagine people like Hearns, or Hagler, or Duran not being able to dominate today's divisions if they were active and at their peak today.

Maybe Loma, GGG and a couple of others would give them a run for their money in fantasy match-ups, but still hard to shake the feeling that yesterday's guys were just, well, better.

The article placed the reason on one thing only, activity. So when Walters' said 'I'm in the money-making business, so a layoff for me is part of the business....', it made me think of that article and why today's top drawer fighters pale in comparison to yesterday's.

Inactivity WILL affect his performance, as it affects all boxers' performances, no two ways about it. Saying different is an opinion that I don't agree with (whoever it is).

The layoff could be a factor but hoping he's been in the gym and comes in sharp. Since the draw that everyone scored for Walters, Sosa has showed himself to be top 5 in the division so adding a win over Loma to that and he'd be right in the FOTY discussion.

Activity won't matter. Walters is a 9:1 underdog for a reason. There are levels in boxing. Lomachenko is on an entirely different skill level. Power matters if you can land your power.

Well said. I always feel that being active is the way to hone your reflexes and boxing IQ to as sharp as they can be.

The fighters of the past were way more active than those of today.

There is no way in hell Walters wins a fair fight but it's boxing the judges are paid off for blatant robberies
