I don't think Ward can come in better shape. I do think that Kovalev can. I think Kovalev can work on endurance and diet - I read he eats sub-optimally. When you are an elite sportsman you look for minute gains to bring you that edge - look at 100m sprinters working with hundredths of a second here and there.

Kovalev can also work power punches more to the body. I saw lots of jabs (and his is almost a power punch) but he could just head hunt a little less and body punch more. Kovalev could also bite down on his pride and look up GGG for lessons on how to close off the ring - that would be a huge help as Ward is not as mobile as he used to be.

Ward? Superb comeback but I'm really not sure he can fight better than he did in the second half. Of course, if he does that from the beginning it would be a clearer victory assuming Kov stays the same and doesn't bring anything new.

This is screaming for a rematch but I'm not sure we'll get it. Money will be the biggest issue. It was not a pretty fight. I hope the ppv figures for this fight come out at least respectable and hopefully there'll be a nice surprise to the upside.
I was yelling at the TV for Kovalev to jab more to the body, especially in the second half of the fight. He could easily be a body snatcher by jabbing to the body every single round. He also hurt Ward with a hook to the body in a later round (can't remember which one). If he was landing 1-2 of those a round the whole fight... Ward would have been crawling in the championship rounds instead of surging.

I gotta just enjoy the fight for what it was. I hope the PPV numbers are good.

It was a good fight. This fight could have gone either way... Kovalev 8-5 maybe 7-5. Or Ward by 1 point or a draw. the 2nd half was mostly won by ward IMO. Rd 3 and 4 was wards. I think Kovalev won maybe 3 rounds a the 2nd half of the fight. Tough card to score. Good fight. Rematch is needed.

Exactly (about round 10)! As soon as I saw the cards, I had to amend my comments on this fight, because I scored it 114-113 Ward, but the tenth was pretty clearly won by Kovalev. So, I had to start making the point that on the judges' cards, this should have been a Kovalev win, because they got the tenth round wrong.

round 10 wasn't even close but the judges knew that they had to give ward every round in order for him to win so they did it.

which of Kathy Duva's judges were corrupt ?

was it Trowbridge, who gave round 3 to Ward..... but who was then the sole judge who scored round 5 for Kovalev?

was it McKaie, who had Kovalev ahead 5-1 at the halfway point?

or was it Clements, who gave the 12th to Kovalev?

Yeah but one of the judges gave Kovalev the 5th.

it's not like Kovalev was getting stronger down the straight, having more success, or winning the championship rounds

once the fight started flowing Ward's way, Kovalev did not do enough to wrestle it back

as usual, an internal inspection would likely help find the cause of the problem, just as much as an external inspection would

this is kinda like Lara/Canelo..... with Lara having a case, but being unable to pinpoint anything tangible that he did to actually win the fight

                  and the NEW.............

Great fight and looks to serve up one of boxings best rivalries between 2 elite fighters in their prime!

Rematch is needed, Kov should do more bodywork(did it too late) and defense better incoming body shots and Ward should put more torque on his left and keep the fight exclusively on the inside(fight showed he can't outbox Sergey from outside or the mid range) .

I come away feeling Kov has more room for improvements in the rematch than SOG, not good for him!
