I'm glad JDJ recognized that Kovalev was trying to hard to outwrestle Ward.

In really came down to Kovalev wearing down from all the wrestling and fading thus giving ward the opportunity to come back. Ward had nothing from the outside. I still though Kov won but he made a huge mistake of engaging Ward in a wrestling match where Ward is comfortable and more accustomed.

the fact that Jackson thinks Kovalev dominated thefight is going to be a big problem for Sergey.....

..... and the fact that Jackson cannot understand why the judges scored they way they did, is also going to be a problem for Sergey

Does anyone know what John said to Sergey between rounds? The cam was always on Virgil but I was wondering if Jackson was telling Sergey to be safe or if he at all contributed to Kovalev's lack of urgency.

There was hardly any communication between them at all, especially later on in the fight. I'm wondering if Hunter's comments about problems in the camp etc were accurate?

Or whether that is fairly normal for them because they need an interpreter.

To me the fight was close. You could make a stronger argument for Kovalev by a point, Ward by a point, or a draw. But to say Ward only won 3 or 4 rounds at best is being extremely bias IMO. As for the wrestling, well that's on Kovalev because he did not want to engage in any in fighting. You can't say Ward was doing all the holding and clinching because I have yet to see a fighter put himself in a reverse headlock. There were multiple times in each round where Kovalev tied Ward up, almost picking him up and pushing him to the ropes o avoid infighting. You can't put that on Ward IMO. This fight was 2 fighters trying hard to impose their will on each other. I definitely want to see a rematch and have no issues paying for the PPV. I enjoyed the fight. Although I picked Ward to win, had Kovalev been granted the decision I would have been ok with it and would not be one of those who claim the decision was a robbery or a home town decision. The fight was just that close.
The robbery occurred in the Perez - Hooker fight. That was a robbery. Perez won that fight easily.
As for the rematch, if Kovalev can't get to Ward early, learn how to in fight, and or improve his conditioning its going to be another Ward victory but more convincingly and by a wider margin. Look, if this fight showed folks anything, it proved you can use your opponents aggression against them for your benefit. Between the body shots by Ward and making Kovalev uncomfortable with the attempts at infighting, Kovalev expended too much energy. Energy that he needed to keep the sting on his shots down the stretch.
What else can I say. I love tactical fights.

I noticed someone in their corner was speaking to Kovalev in his native tongue most of the time the camera was in their corner. I wonder if JDJ gave that person instructions during the round to pass on between rounds.

Kovalev didn't have much of a choice, Andre was determined to get in the inside and make it a rough and tough affair. To Kovalev's credit though, he did neutralize a lot of Andre's inside fighting that is why he was also doing a lot of clinching.

JDJ is a good trainer and I expect the rematch to be even better but people have to remember that Andre will also make adjustments and improvements when they fight again.

I'm fine with the decision, the fight could have gone either way. I thought Andre did enough to slightly edge the fight in his favor.

Rewatched the fight. Kovalev won rounds 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 10 clearly, already winning the fight with a knockdown, 6-6.

Round 5 was even in punches but Kovalev was the effective aggressor, breaking the even round in his direction. That makes it 7-5 Kovalev, plus a knockdown.

Rounds 9, 11, and 12 were all swing rounds where Ward did better work inside, and outhustled Kovalev a little bit, but where Kovalev landed the better head shots, and landed with more power overall.

If you give Kovalev just one of the swing rounds, it's 8-4 Kovalev. Give him two and it's 9-3. So JDJ was right on point. I had it 8-4. It was actually an amazing performance by Kovalev to win so decisively even with a referee who allowed Ward to use all his rule-bending tricks without even a warning. Kovalev overcame all the odds and surprised a lot of people on NSB, which is why you see some people hedging not wanting to admit what happened. I'd say this earned Kovalev #1 pound for pound except they both looked a little past their primes to me. This is the problem with waiting until guys are 32, or 33, years old. The stamina goes and you have a low activity fight. Kovalev threw less than 500 punches. Ward only threw 350. So pound for pound wise, I would probably just keep them where they were before the fight.
