While Kovalev is the easy favorite to win, I am still not ready to completely write Andre Ward off just yet. Like Kovalev, he has that amateur pedigree. Therefore, he is just as fundamentally sound as he is.

In order for Andre to win this bout, he has to almost fight a perfect fight. First, he has to force Sergey to fight off the back foot, then he must get his punches off first and lastly he must pick and choose his spots very wisely. A good defense would almost always shut down a good offense.

Moreover, all the intangibles favor Ward. He is easily the more flexible and versatile of the two fighters. He knows how to make adjustments on the fly.

While on the other hand, Sergey is the more predictable and static of the two. He is more of an offensive oriented fighter, who can cut off the ring, likes coming forward and getting his punches off first, by fighting off the front foot.

If Ward can neutralize this aspect of his game then he stands a good chance of winning but if not and decides to try and out box Kovalev from the outside, then he runs the risk of losing and getting hurt.

Because one, HBO is sanctioning it. They are not expecting Andre Ward to win this fight. They approved this fight for the sole purpose of him to lose it. Secondly, he's facing a naturally stronger and wider man, who is fundamentally sound, with infinite punching power and can punch like a mule. Lastly, Ward is making his foray into the light heavyweight division for the very first time in his professional career against the lineal, universally recognized champion at 175 who has been knocking out guys who have been naturally larger and stronger than himself.

If Andre wins mucho respect to him and he deserves all the bells and whistles that come with it. Its not a race/nationalistic/culture thing to me.
Great post. People making a case for a guy that in their hearts they think will lose but because of some sense of nationalistic 'duty' they feel the need to make a case for 'their' guy.

This is an easy easy pick, Kovalev is way too much fighter for Ward. Ward simply cannot keep SK off him the entire time. Wide UD or probable mercy stoppage.

Some on here are reading the odds wrong - they linked up oddschecker and stated that Kov was favourite. Ward is a slight favourite in the betting.

That said, he is getting brutally exposed by Kovalev, who simply has way way too much for the Oakland cherrypicker.

This aint no Paul Smith or Alexander Brand.

If anybody has to fight a perfect fight it's Kovalev.

He makes way more mistakes than Ward.

He is too squared-up and drop his hands to his waist after every punch.
