Slightly off topic but that 2004 Olympic games where GGG beat Dirrell in the semi finals had some interesting fights at MW. Obviously GGG Vs Dirrell, also N'Dam Vs Angulo, N'Dam Vs Lee. Pascal fought also.
I've just been looking at that year on Wiki, and some of the other familiar names that competed that year : Rau'shee Warren, Shiming, Gamboa, Rigondeaux, Mares, Juan Manuel Lopez, Khan, Vanes, Berto, Ward, Shumenov, Y.P Hernandez, Povetkin.
It was a few years back now, but i hardly remember those games apart from the Khan story, which was big over here.
It's interesting to go back and refresh the memory on who fought, as well as pick up on some names that were maybe unfamiliar at the time, but not so now.
Anyway, ignore my ramblings..back to the topic at handComment

He lost to 8 fighters (His record says 5).
Damian Austin (Cuba)
Suriya Prasathinpimai (Thailand)
Andre Dirrell
Eduard Gutnecht
Yordanis Despaigne
Gaydarbek Gaydarbekov
Nikolay Galochkin
Mohamed Hikal
Only three of those fighters turned pro.
Dirrell and Despaigne pretty much flamed out.
Gutnecht is fighting against Groves next, but he's a journeyman.Comment

All fighters lose in the amateurs because sometimes they have to face much older more experienced fighters at a very young age, GGG had a very successful amateur career but nothing out of this world considering the fact that he fought as an amateur till he was 25 years old. A lot of fighters turn pro much earlier than that.
Andre Ward turned pro at 20 years old and was already multi division national champion and olympic gold medalist, same for Dela Hoya who turned pro at 19, Roy Jones, Floyd Mayweather at 18, even Amir Khan at 17-18 and the list goes on and on, these guys don't get that much credit for their amateur accomplishments because nobody brags about them since they've accomplished enough in the pro ranks.
Even Tarver had a very good amateur career and nobody even knows about it, they only remember his KO of Jones and that's it.Last edited by Dip_Slide; 11-17-2016, 06:59 PM.Comment
