Tuneups are ok sip long as they aren't making a career out of fighting them. Yes I'm talking to Gary Russell, minus his loma and jhonny

Are 'tune ups' really that essential?

Not if you are active. Sadly most elite caliber guys in boxing are fighting 2 times a year maximum. At that clip I think tune ups are probably a reality. Although part of the problem there is you can damn near go into full tune up mode with your career. For examples Canelo, Adonis Stevenson & Danny Garcia who are fighting subpar &/or undeserving competition largely if not exclusively at this point in their careers.

Tuneups are fine to keep sharp and stay active between challenging fights. Obviously fighters end up taking too many tuneups, but as boxing fans we should do more to rebel against that. Instead we encourage it.

if fighters are only going to fight once or twice a year they should be fighting solid oppnents. One hard night of fighting in 12 months isnt too much to ask is it really. I'd give a few bum fights a pass if they were fighting 4 or 5 times a year. FIghting a bum twice a year isnt 'keeping active'

Let these fighters remain active if they like hell you use the excuse for GGG why cant other fighters get that pass?
