Mayweather's only objective was to survive for twelve rounds. You can't do much with that kind of objective. Vargas wanted to conquer the sport.

Mayweather beat Pacquiao by about 116 to 112. Pacquiao beat Vargas by about 117 to 110. Mayweather clearly succeeded in defeating Pacquiao while Vargas was easily defeated. What little success Vargas had came from being aggressive because he isn't a skilled defensive fighter. Mayweather is so highly skilled both on offense and defense that he can and did outpoint Pacquiao fighting mainly a defensive fight. Mayweather fights to win, not to please the fans.
