Duran goaded Leonard into 'brawling' in Montreal
This is one of the greatest pieces of revisionist history in the sport. All the interviews in the months leading up to that fight featured Dundee and Leonard both saying that Duran was coming up to their division. That Ray was the bigger man and that Duran was going to see what it was like to face a real welterweight. Duran then showed he was more than capable of standing with a real welterweight.
The US sports media, at a loss as to how they would write the story of an American golden boy being beaten, bombarded Dundee in he aftermath with theories that Ray had 'abandoned' his boxing and had been suckered into a street fight with the crude Panamanian. Dundee said 'Sure, why not.' And thus the myth was born.Comment

I first read the truth in a brilliant collection called "The Hurt Business", give it a read.
There's a very good article by Thomas Hauser on the topic, check it out.
In terms of reading, no he can't, although I assume he has taken lessons since that embarrassing incident.Comment
