Champions only seem to defend their titles once or twice a year. I know it's because it takes about six months to hype up a fight and milk it for it's worth. But it's so frustrating, an athlete only has a limited time before their career is over and they're spending more time talking about fighting than actually fighting.
Champions don't fight enough

If they fight 2 good fighters in a year its all good ,problem is level of comp and not number of fights -
Exactly twice a year isn't bad, now look at Golovkin's year (Wade and Brook) thats horrible same as Canelo, Pacquaio is having a pretty good year two champs (Bradley and Vargas) Ward is having a good year (Barrera and Kovalev) Thurman had one really good fight, I hope he fights twice next year thoComment

Lack of activity and lack of quality. You couldn't ask for worse circumstances tbh.
Truth is, a lot of these guys masquerading as champions are not true champions and they would have been battered by the true champions of the past and I'm not even talking way back in the 50s or anything. I'm talking about guys like Oscar, Mosley, Tito, Pacquiao, Chavez Sr and co.Comment

I agree. I disagree where the problem is doe.
Most cats seem like to lay the blame on the fighters entirely. I tend to believe the bigger problem is the lack of TV dates that can pay the fighters their worth being available to them.
I mean just look at HBO for an easy example. I mean how many of there guys can fight 3 or 4 times a year without running out of dates or running out of money on HBO's side? I suspect not many.
That said I doubt these days with all the things going on you could get any regularity with champions fighting more than 3 times a year. Just look at the UFC which is a well oiled machine cranking out cards all the time & they are basically only keeping most of their top guys & champions in the cage 3 times a year maximum with their 50+ dates a year.Comment

Back in the good ol' days when the best fought the best. People would lose and people wouldn't act like they're bums because of a loss. People liked the fact that they had the balls to consistently be in great fights.Lack of activity and lack of quality. You couldn't ask for worse circumstances tbh.

Today DeGale and Jack get in the ring and it's supposed to be amazing some how.Comment

If there was only one champion per division and fewer divisions, I could see it a little better than the way it is now. All of those belts out there and on top of this watered down situation, the champs are fighting only twice a year. It's really screwing the fans over and it's a good reason casuals tune in less and less which definitely hurts the sport over time. You can't have hardcores until they first become casuals. The next crop of fans is getting slimmer all the time. Of course, the sport itself doesn't seem to care. It may have to hit rock bottom before anything changes.Champions only seem to defend their titles once or twice a year.
