  • Golovkin is everything that is GOOD for boxing

    1) He fights fair. Respects the rules, wins clear, no clinch/hold/illegal tactics. He gives the audience the action they've tuned in for. One could mention that he punched Lemieux when he was in the ground but that was all I can find against him in this regard.

    2) He's very active. Fights three times a year. While the rest of the top fighters fight just twice, or sometimes just once.

    3) Never ducked anyone from his own division. One could claim that he didn't seem very interested in fighting Ward after 2014 (he says he agreed to fight Ward in 2013 but Ward couldn't fight at that time) but fighters can't duck fighters from other divisions.
IMO they should fight the best in their divisions, that's what matters to me.
Never vacated a title in order to avoid a fight.

    4) He doesn't play weight games. He cuts 10/11 pounds. Not 15, 20. So you know he never holds an unfair advantage. He's been outweighed in all recent fights.

    5) Makes concesions to get fights made. Regardless or what some say, he makes concesions. Others would like to see him humilliated, but since he doesn't do that, he's labeled by them as hard to negotiate with. He's fought in many countries, unlike some other stars that barely get away from some state.

    6) Seems like a good dude/person. A good role model for people. Family man with good values, doesn't beat women, isn't violent outside a ring, is educated and promotes good values. Doesn't party, doesn't drink, doesn't do drugs.
Tries to learn the language of every country he's fought in, which is not something every fighter does.

    7) He's professional. Keeps his weight at 170 even when not fighting.

    8) He's doing VADA testing.

    --------------------------------

What else can I say? the man is just so likeable in every aspect.

He does have a lot of good points.

I'm a fan of his but i still think he needs to move up soon and test himself. Once he beats Saunders and/or Jacobs, he really has nothing to prove as a Middleweight. As a fan, i'd be disappointed not to see him even try to go up in weight and beat top opponents there.

Aside from that, i can't really fault him. It's not like he hasn't tried to get the best fights in the division.

I would add to that list:

He takes step aside money and then complains about not getting fights he wants.

He only fought twice this year like Haymon top guys. he gets overpaid for easy fights so fights like GGG/jacobs can't be made because his purse expectations are crazy.

He won his title in the boardroom and not in the ring.

IMO GGG has been great for the sport in a number of ways. For me, he has TREMENDOUS value as a fighter that helps differentiate true fans of the sport from posters who like him solely because he non American and not black or hispanic.

Another GGG thread. More feed for the trolls.

        Good job.

            Name them.

            Are they also P4P fighters?

He also pursues top fighters at or around his weight like Saunders, Jacobs and Canelo.

He puts on action fights that bring in fans to a sport that has a dwindling interest.
