Comments Thread For: Luis Nery Closes in on Title Shot at Bantamweight

21-year old Luis Nery (21-0, 15 KO), 118, of Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico, scored his second straight impressive knockout on Saturday night at the Auditorio Municipal in Tijuana, scorching 29-year old former flyweight and Jr. bantamweight title challenger Richie Mepranum (31-6-1, 8 KO), 118 , of Maasim, Sarangani, Philippines, in just two rounds. It was the fourth, and quickest, stoppage loss of Mepranum's career.

I've probably seen 6-7 fights of Nery and he is a solid talent. He has only been dropped once and fought one fight where the fight could have been a draw but dominated all his other fights but man, at 21 years old, he is pretty damn good.

Luis has talent, but I don't think he's ready. He's not as good as Estrada, yet, and these easy fights are not helping him. Ritchie stood in front of Panterita and laid down as soon as Luis got too close. Not to mention Ritchie's a blown up, used up flyweight. Yamanaka will not lay down so easy, nor Tapales and the rest of the champions are very mobile, unlikely to sit still for this type of beating. Warren is a fancy Dan, McDonnell is a stepper and Haskins could break speed records. I don't give him much chance against any of them outside of Mexico.

Mepranum it was a good fight.

        Mepranum vs Estrada: 10 rounds.

        Mepranum vs Cuadras: 8 rounds.

Mepranum vs Marquez x 2: DU.

He could K.O everybody in this weight, he is very strong, and he knows how to brawl and box, and is a solid body puncher.

          What fight it was?

Mendez? Nery won easy... but Mendez was the local fighter.

He dominated all his fights in his career.

David Sanchez battling for make the 115 pounds.

That Sanchez vs Nica Concepcion: 10 rounds.

Luis Nery vs David Sanchez in a very good form, strong: 4 rounds.

Nery threw 450 pounds in 4 rounds, he threw more punches than Leo Santa Cruz but Nery is a real ****er. True fact...

Mepranum vs Marquez, Estrada, & Cuadras @ 112. Mepranum vs Panterita 118! Showcase fight, but no way to get ready for a serious test.

That's how I feel as well.
Nery likes to get real cute and thinks that crap he calls "defense" in between his offensive mma-style bursts won't get his ass laid out.
Also, both Cuadras and Estrada have far better skill-sets, are far more mobile along with the fact that this fight was at a much higher weight.

People put too much emphasis on who stops who faster. Like that means anything. Power isn't everything.
There's so many intangibles to think about and analyze, that I wonder how anyone can see someone bombing out bums and think that suddenly they are world-beaters.
Too busy seeing if opponents can handle his shots, lets see how he handles them. Yamanaka can pop a little bit.
If you say that a guy is in a fight because he always has "a puncher's chance" than you might as well just give up because literally everyone has that.
