Comments Thread For: So, About that Heavyweight Renaissance

By Cliff Rold - There was a real feeling of change in the air. After years of almost casual dominance at the top of the class, and oft-malignant mediocrity beneath it, heavyweight was showing new signs of life in the last year or so. One could see it coming longer than that. The class was getting younger and more aggressive...

Agree, it has been a letdown. I even wonder if the Joshua-Klitschko negotiations will break down now that there are so many vacant titles available.

Such a shame. I came into the year with such high hopes.

The division as a whole has the potential to open up next year, though. We are likely to get Povetkin-Stiverne in December which shouldn't be overlooked. It's a good fight. 2017 is going to get interesting, especially now that Fury is out of the picture all of a sudden. Be optimistic.

As Cliff wrote, that doesn't really look like a scorcher does it?

The only thing that can salvage the year for heavyweights is Joshua vs Klitschko. But sadly HBO's ties with Klit are probably going to block the fight from happening.

Hearn has sounded optimistic that they'd make the Josh-Vlad but it might get pushed until after new year, I agree.

                That fights gonna fall through...

I cant see the WBA or WBO sanctioning that fight for their respective belts and Hearn has already said he won't be fighting klitschko with just the IBF on the line... whats the point? he can give Joshua another tomato can and then fight Parker in a unification if he beats ruiz for the WBO belt.

I cant see hearn risking the cash cow for just the IBO belt for joshua to gain...and now they have ortiz in the stable, he'll be happy enough to have potential for his stable to have two of the belts..

the vast majority of the money for this fight is coming from Europe though. I dont think HBO or Sho have a huge amount of power here.

I also read somewhere that Wlads deal with HBO is over? Dont know if thats true or not

Thr main problem for making the fight this year is finding the right venue. Joshuas Nov26th date is booked at a 20,000 seater in manchester. AJ vs Klitschko is a stadium fight here or in Germany. Then they would want to promote a fight of this magnitude properly (fighter documenteries, gloves are off etc). They would be taking short money to make thr fight for this year.

I think it ends up being agreed for next year (like Kov vs Ward was) while one or both fights an easy fight to end this year

Where did you read that? ESPN said Wlad signed a 5 fight deal starting with Jennings. That would put him right in the middle now. Just let both networks show the fight and pay their fighters separately.
