  • Moving up in weight: Why the fuss?

Look at any of his threads and the following theme appears 'GGG has to move up in weight to prove himself'. I always wonder, why is it seen as such a terrible thing to be a dominant champion in one division?

In this age of catchweights, people moving up and down in weight constantly and 4 beltholders, not to mention super and diamond champions, theres a lack of clarity as to who the real champion in most divisions are. Gennady Golovkin has 3 of the belts and is looking to get the 4th belt, this ambition, however appears to be seen as a negative by many on this site.

In my eyes, welterweight, middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight are the glamour divisions, and these are the divisions where you talk about all the great fighters, not the junior and super weight categories. So why the demand for a fighter to move up in weight these days? Does clearing out a division and proving you are the best by taking and beating all comers of people who are the same size (the point of weight classes) not prove you as a fighter?

And do people feel its better for example to be a 4 weight world champion in which youve never really dominated a division, or become synonymous with a division by dominating it for a long period of time?

I don't see it as having to prove himself just to be in exciting fights, by exciting I mean competitive where you can't pick a winner.

Every fight of GGG's I can remember the opponents he is fighting the question is what round will he stop him not who will win. Go figure, it's pathetic to want him to hang around 160, you don't achieve greatness facing chinny title holders when you're considered a huge puncher for the weight, clear out 168 as you have 160 and then you've achieved something special.

Right now I see nothing holding GGG back but for a payday versus Cameltoč, that's great for him just don't expect real boxing fans not to be able to see through it.

Fighters move up in weight when they no longer can make their weight without killing themselves....with very rare exceptions.

Moving up just to please a bunch of clowns that will never going to be your fans no matter what is the most idiotic move you can do.

Fighters move up because they can no longer make the weight, ie, Ward, Broner, Mikey, etc. OR there is one lucrative fight waiting for you in that division, ie, Floyd vs out of prime Oscar.

This sums it up nicely, hang around at 160 for the canelo payday in fights people are guessing the round the ko comes or move up and show how good he is by fighting guys bigger than him. Its not his fault middleweights been weak recently but if he wants to be remembered as an atg he will need to be in fights where the opponent is seen as a challenge and not someone waiting to be ko'd easiest way to get more of these fights is to move up in weight.

Because nobody will fight him at 160.

1 thing I think that bothers most GGG haters is the fact that he has called out bigger and smaller fighters. I think if GGG and his team took a different approach and called a spade a spade then I think some (not all) would look at him differently. I dont blame the guy for taking a cash grab in Brook but its hypocritical the way he about things.

People who hate him with latch on whatever's available. He hasn't fought Lara, so he's ducking Lara. He didn't fight at SMW, he's not moving up like all the prior champs before him, he's not taking a joke offer from Canelo, he's not following in the steps of the greats, he's not willing to drop down to 155 while being Canelo's mandatory, he's not willing to challenge himself, when he called out Floyd, he's picking on smaller guys.

The little b1tches will continue whining about what they can. You can bet if he didn't take the Brook fight the same idiots who are now running around yelling "OMG IT WAS A MISMATCH HE WEIGHTED 30 LBS MORE OMG" would be saying "he ducked Brook cuz Brook had style and skills to bother him".
