      See Holyfield-Qawi I.

Holyfield's run through the cruiserweight division was pretty amazing. Qawi and Deleon were considered pretty good champions.

Cruiserweight limit is 200 pounds so some cruiserweights weight about 215 pounds on fight night. That is as much or more than 90% of the past heavyweight champions weighed in their prime. Marciano 185, Dempsey 188. Louis, 200, Jack Johnson 195, Liston 212, Foreman,215, Ali 206, Frazier 205,Holmes 210, Holyfield 200 etc. The cruiserweight class is an unneeded weight class. When the weight limit was 190 it made some sense for guys who couldn't quite make 175 but didn't want to fight guys who weighed 220 pounds or more. With the weight limit set at 200 pounds cruiserweights are plenty big enough to compete as heavyweights. Every cruiserweight champion moves up to heavyweight where the big money is. That is why this weight class is weak. Amost all the good cruiserweights are fighting as heavyweights because really, they are heavyweights.

To answer your question, back when cruiserweight was started with a weight limit of 190 and same day weigh ins it was a good and useful weight class for guys who couldn't quite make 175 but were too light to fight good 215 pound boxers. Holyfield was a terrific fighter at that weight and there were some other very good 190 pounders.

I disagree, with the size of the current heavyweights, it's definitely a needed division. You can't tell me that guys like Cunningham and Adamek weren't eaten alive at heavy because of sheer size. Usyk is probably one of the most skilled fighters in the world, but he would likely be dominated by guys like Wilder,Joshua,Fury, etc. at heavy.
