    De La Hoya/Mayweather wont happen!

i was reading an article in the new york times this morning and it was talking about the possible matchup.

de la hoya says under no circumstance will he fight without mayweather in his corner.

and mayweather said under no circunstance will he train a fighter to knock out his son. he called it "lose, lose"

so everyone can stop wasting breath with pointless predictions.

De La Hoya's Next Opponent Could Be His Trainer's Son

LAS VEGAS, May 7 — After a powerful performance Saturday night, Oscar De La Hoya faced a delicate decision.

De La Hoya's sixth-round technical knockout of Ricardo Mayorga set up a potential September showdown with Floyd Mayweather Jr. (36-0), perhaps the world's best pound-for-pound fighter. But there is a major catch. De La Hoya's trainer is Floyd Mayweather Sr.

Would De La Hoya (38-4) fight his trainer's son? Would the elder Mayweather step aside and allow another trainer to replace him for one fight? Or would Mayweather work the corner, staring at his son across the ring? Will De La Hoya, 33, simply avoid the situation and retire, ending his career with Saturday's vintage showing?

During his news conference Saturday night, De La Hoya said he would never fight anyone without Mayweather Sr. in his corner.

"If I fight again, I have to have Floyd Sr., my partner," De La Hoya said. "He's the person who brings the confidence, he's the person who puts the game plan together. Without him, we would be missing that link. It would be impossible."

But Mayweather Jr. turned up the pressure on De La Hoya after attending Saturday's fight at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Mayweather had been trained by his father, but they parted ways professionally years ago after a disagreement. The younger Mayweather said he was willing to face De La Hoya regardless of who did the training.

"It's about two living legends meeting, two guys going down in history," he said. "Boxing is about legacies. The Golden Boy versus the Pretty Boy? Absolutely. The public's been wanting the fight.

"I respect my dad. My dad's a great trainer, Oscar's a great fighter, and Oscar's a great businessman. I think the fight's going to happen."

De La Hoya did not sound so convinced. By winning the World Boxing Council super-welterweight championship from Mayorga (27-6-1), De La Hoya won his ninth world title in six weight classes. De La Hoya is set financially and has said that he will retire soon or end his career in September. A career-ending bout against Mayweather is the most compelling and lucrative option, but De La Hoya left open the possibility of another opponent.

"There's nothing on the table," he said.

Referring to Mayweather, De La Hoya said: "I have to say he is the best pound-for-pound fighter out there. But that fight is not guaranteed. The decision I will be making in the next few weeks I'm sure will catch a lot of people by surprise."

Mayorga might have been caught by surprise by De La Hoya, expecting him to be rusty or vulnerable after a 20-month layoff. But De La Hoya floored Mayorga with a vicious left hook before Mayorga barely broke a sweat.

Mayorga almost did not escape the first round, but that only prolonged his punishment. De La Hoya used his superior hand speed to treat Mayorga like a punching bag. In the sixth round, a barrage of combinations knocked down Mayorga, then another barrage, lasting 10 seconds, forced the referee Jay Nady to stop the bout with Mayorga against the ropes.

Even De La Hoya seemed surprised that he was able to hurt Mayorga so quickly, especially because, De La Hoya said, he had torn the rotator cuff in his left shoulder during training.

"I didn't tell anybody," he said. "I didn't want this fight to be in jeopardy. It hurts like heck, but my conditioning and focus overcame the pain."

De La Hoya said that he could continue to fight with the injury and that he did not plan to have surgery. But the prospect of a De La Hoya-Mayweather fight concerned Mayweather Sr.

"If I've got anything to do with it, and I've got a lot to do with it, it ain't going to happen," he said. "Step in my shoes. Train somebody else to knock your kid out? It's a no-win situation."

Anytime we can get two great fighters in the ring, I definately want it to happen. Boxing is the only sport where the best of the best dont meet consistently.

In the Daily Press today DLH said "Im going to make a decisian that will probably shock a lot of people." Does that mean that hes going to quit? Either way, a fight with Mayweather doesnt seem likley right now.
