To be fair though, if he is retired, it makes for quite a story.

Retired undefeated after beating arguably the most dominant (not the best) heavyweight champ in history in terms of dominance over an entire era and taking all his belts. Then wallops a load of coke, calls himself Tyson Montana on Twitter and then retires.

Was there really any other way for a character like Fury to go out?

Maybe so, but Louis also had almost two 2-year gaps without fighting in those 11 years. He fought in in March '42 and didn't fight again until November '44 and then after that fight in '44 he didn't fight again until 1946. So essentially for a 4 year period in that 11 years, he had 1 fight.

I know the war was happening so it's not his fault but saying he was champ for 11 years is a bit of a distorted fact when you consider 4 of those were inactive.

25 Defences was great of course, but it was the norm to fight every few weeks back then with plenty of "bums" thrown in.
