In Japan, do they really do those rookie pro tournaments and champion carnivals as described in Hajime no Ippo? If that is the truth, I could see how and why boxing is thriving there. It would be great to see tournaments like that here in the states, and maybe we would get off the 1 loss = bum mentality that is so prevalent here.

Its 2016 and he asked about the Japanese boxing style, not how it was 20 years ago, and Japan has never been a nation associated with boxing until recently
Boxing in Japan are on the rise and are currently one of the top boxing nations atm and they have alot of great talents, and as i said Japanese fighters are usually very well schooled and disciplined
And also Japan has one of the shortest (height) people on the planet in % (average is 5'7)
So it is not surprising that they have more fighters in the lower weight divisions.
Also winning the national championships in Japan is like 10x harder then in the US, so the competition to the top is alot higher

From what I've seen, Japanese boxers seem to eat more punches than Mexican boxers. They fight like Kamikaze pilots with no worry about their own health or safety, only the intent of hurting their opponents.
