Ward said his promotion is piggybacking off of the Canelo fight and thanked Canelo.
The press conference was only held in Arlington because Saul "Canelo" Alvarez was staging a fight that put 50k people into JerryLand. Were it not for Canelo, why would Roc Nation/Main Events even go to Texas?
game recognizes game; Ward was simply keeping it real.
Love that interview. People here act like teenage nerds arguing about superman vs spiderman. Talking about who is shook. They don't seem to understand that these guys are NOT fighting for fun. It's their job. It's how they feed their families and set up their retirement. The bravado comes 2nd. Look at how many boxers from back in the day have fked up their careers and are poor. Things are different now. A lot of guys are trying to be smarter.
Do I like that? As a fan, no. But, I do not blame a guy who wants to get what he's worth. I often get clients who want me to do free work. They try to pitch it as fun, as if we'll just hang out at my studio and record some tracks. Fk no. That's my work. Pay me if you want me to work.
Your post makes no sense. Theres a difference between paying a fighter whats he is worth and overpaying a fighter. In boxing the latter has become the norm. Loma, jacobs, berto, walters, rigo, quillin, lara, crawford, ortiz, ward and many others are way overpaid considering the crowd, gate, and ratings they bring.
Keep in mind that i didnt take into account the level of opposition because in that case all boxers are overpaid to fight bums. Boxing is supposed to be a competitive sport but the competitive matches are not getting made and this turns people off. Fighters want the payday but they dont want part in the competitive aspect.
They should realize that in the end if the viewer isnt presented competitive fights they wont tune to see your product and you wont get paid because the money is made off the consumer. However promoters, managers, and boxers are too concerned on making a quick buck so they dont think or care about the long term because they figure its not their problem.
Boxers forget that they are responsible for providing the consumer with entertainment and a big part of that is facing the best. Just like any other sport. If they dont do that then they're not doing their job and shouldnt expect to be handsomely rewarded. They are pushing their viewers away, so how do they expect to get paid if no one wants to see their garbage mismatch?

Didn't have time for the novel but in regard to the first part, you don't understand how that type of business works. His worth is dictated by the market. Canelo, or anyone, should go after the most he can get. It's ridiculous to do anything else. Quit being emotional about it and accept that 51,000 people just filled up an arena for the dude. He's clearly doing fantastic business. In fact, he's leading the sport. THAT'S who you take lessons from.
These fighters see what's really going on. GGG is trying to get rich off of Canelo. I think it's pretty obvious to see now that they turned down 3 times the highest payday Golovkin has ever received. They see the hard work young Canelo has put in since he was a pro at 15. They saw him take the short end of the stick against Floyd and Cotto and make concessions to get the fights made. GGG thinks he's about to sit there and not give up anything and make a name off off Canelo? Let's see what Mayweather says about that:
He gave up the titles and the respect of his countrymen. You are correct, he doesn't owe him anymore.

Novel? Seriously?
Then you wont like this reply.
A boxers worth is dictated by the market and canelo leads on that but lets not pretend GGG isnt his biggest matchup right now. However there are no lessons to be taken from him. He has a built in fanbase in mexicans. He has the clean cut look, smiles, and is supposedly friendly and had floyd and cotto to help him into stardom.
He is doing a poor job at being the head of the sport. Hes trying to pull a Mayweather although theres no evidence that prolonging may/pac made it bigger than it would have been in 2009-2010. What it did was leave a sour taste with casuals. Boxing in hbo is pretty limited and pbc is on its last legs. The last thing the sport needs now is that the face of boxing gives the example that you can duck and still get overpaid for fighting bums.
Overpaying guys for fighting bums is exactly why the sport is in its current state. Its why hbo has slowly stopped investing, and why pbc has created no stars and many of their top fighters only fight once a year. Nobody wants to see mismatches and you cant pay boxers if no one wants to see their fight.
Haymon sold boxers the lie that they can get overpaid fighting bums. That makes no sense at all. But since it was not his money haymon scammed hbo, and the pbc investors. He got paid anyways so its not like he cares, but boxing was left with an unsustainable structure. You cant overpay your employees, sell a bad product, overpay yourself, and still expect the product to turn a profit.
In the eyes of mexicans canelo is a hero and he excels in boxing which is like their #2 sport. Americans however have many other popular sports in which their athletes excel. They wont sit through a boxing mismatch when they can just as easily tune into another sport where their athletes excel but there is also a sense of competitiveness.
