  • Two Fights a Year Isn't Enough

Some people blame Floyd Mayweather, Jr. for this trend. He might have had a part in it, but I won't say it was only him. Lots of guys have been doing this for a while. In my opinion, the top fighters especially, shouldn't just be stepping into the ring twice a year.

Now I'm not knocking Canelo for this year since it seems that he has another fight on the horizon and three is better than two. Golovkin might get a December date, also and Golovkin has consistently been fighting three times a year for a while which is better than twice. Crawford and Spence could easily fight three times this year as well. So maybe the trend is fading. I certainly hope so.

The big problem I have with this is that it creates a lack of opportunities. Jack Dempsey is one of my favorite champions of all time, but his reign was too lax. He gave way too few guys an opportunity at his title. And I see this with the supposed A-side fighters whatever that means.

Danny Garcia has fought once since January against Guerrero who I didn't see as deserving a shot at anything. Keith Thurman has fought once against Shawn Porter who was a very quality opponent. Still, I doubt he fights again this year. Billy Joe Saunders hasn't fought at all with really no explanation. Fury and Klitschko have dragged out their rematch all year long. Danny Jacobs just fought his first fight this year against a weak opponent. Roman Gonzalez will most likely only fight twice this year and he's number 1 p4p according to the Ring. I think this does not bode well for the sport.

Duran, Chavez, Sr. and so many others fought four-six times a year in their heyday. I would like to see the highly regarded guys fighting at the same. we'd get to see them more often and when they do face weaker opposition, it won't seem nearly so bad when they have a big fight right around the corner. And it would give more guys an opportunity to rise up as well. A fighter who's in his prime fighting twice a year is wasting his time and could be doing much more- making more money, entertaining more crowds and building his record as well.

nevermind who is to blame but yes that is just crazy 2 times a month, pssh.

3 fights minimum for top elite fighters, the rest more and more.

If you take into account the whole sport from 105-200+ just the champions alone from the major sanctioning bodies : IBF,WBA,WBC,WBO ( not including talented prospects or contenders ) you get over 115 fights if they fought a minimum of two fights a year. Now if you are say.... a Golovtard and only keep up with whats going on with this hype-job than yeah I would be desperate for more bum fights. The problem is not the amount of fights but the quality of opponents.

With so many boxing orgs trying to stick their fingers in pies, there is very little leverage to force fighters into the ring. Don't like the WBC? Sweet as, I've got IBF, WBO and WBA on speed dial anyway.

Until the fat is trimmed (which is very unlikely - we've allowed this sport to be rotted to the core), there is no jurisdiction and no one for fighters to answer to.

I stopped giving a **** about Fury-Klitch a while ago. Hopefully, there are plenty of others who have stopped giving a **** too - and that will show when the fight does come around and people aren't interested.

The only way to get control back is to stop paying for and watching fights, or fighters, that don't deserve it.

I mean - Canelo-Smith for example, why the **** would anyone bother watching it? It was never going to add any value to your life, it was never going to be anything other than predictable. So don't watch crap like that. Full credit to Smith - tough as nails - but if you are sick and tired of constant Canelo/GGG headlines or whatever, don't waste your time with garbage - walk away until they give you what YOU as a fan wants.

I would be fine with that. There's nothing crazy about it. If you're the best, fight everybody and I think champions taking non-title fights is fine, too. This gives guys who'd never get a shot into the ring with the champion for exposure and possibly a chance to pull the upset.

I'd like to see the bigger names of each weight fight more, 3x a year at least, but if it where possible I like to see 4 fights a year. Any more could be risky for injuries, plus if you've been in a war, you want some r&r time.

1,2 fights a year is taking the piss however big a name you are.
