You could argue that Liam Smith was unproven but regardless of that he put on a great showing he went 9 rounds with a guy who likely weighed from the high 170's to 180 on the night of the fight Liam Smith is a proper natural 154lber who went 9 rounds fighting the type of fight that suited Canelo Alvarez.
The fact Canelo needed as many rounds to take that type of opponent out isn't a positive sign for Nelo, obviously being the same size as Canelo would have helped him take the shots much better and would have likely seen him last the full fight.
When Canelo was against the ropes Liam was landing massive shots he just doesn't have that natural power If a guy like Liam can land such gigantic winging shots against Canelo would you not say he showed a lot of defensive frailties in Canelo who was clearly taking this fight seriously.
you're doing a lot of unnecessary over-analyzing that needn't be done.
canelo rides the ropes sometimes, i'm pretty sure his team knows not to do this against a man as big and strong as ggg. tie him up and turn 'um let off a couple and repeat, execute when the opportunity presents itself is what i think his corner would come up with. liam never hit him with massive shots, those were british level shots.
When guys let their hands go on Canelo he seems to shell up and become hittable.
Against Golovkin that's an issue.
What's your thoughts?
Yeah exactly the hook from Liam Smith was getting in, HBO were hyping his defensive skills up but I really didn't see it If your defenses were so good you would not have ate the big shots that Canelo did.
Let's set it up then since the certain bunch of people will only create this type of thread If It was Golovkin who fought Liam Smith like last night.
Gennady Golovkin (C) Vs. Kell Brook
Kell landed at a fairly not bad rate but this is an opponent who GGG walked down and didn't bother with defending against
So 300 punches thrown in just 5 rounds only 80 punches landed against Golovkin lets compare that with Canelo's fight with Liam Smith
Liam Smith (C) Vs. Canelo Alvarez
Liam was for a good portion of the fight was backing Canelo Alvarez up and landing nice little combos but similar to Kell he was landing but not hurting his man however unlike Kell, Liam had absolutely no snap to his shot
So 400 punches from both men at round 9 this isn't a fight that was by any means fought at a fast pace, Liam landed over 100 punches and miraculously Canelo never felt the effects of draining his body from 20-30lbs thus remained with his power late on in the fight, strange one that isn't it?
So from the comparison of both stats we can tell that Liam Smith was at times actually landing more punches in some rounds whereas Golovkin was always landing more.
What I do find funny is that HBO unwillingness to give Smith any props or any rounds when he clearly deserve one or two of them but nope Harold Lederman was instructed to do what Golden Boy wanted him to do.
Liam Smith was more successful than Kell Brook was against Golovkin, how about that then yet nobody wants to talk about Canelo being exposed?
Whats the point? Brook landed a higher percent than Liam Smith did.

I know what you mean but I expect him to be more defensively responsible against Golovkin, I also don't see him shelling up for too long, I see something more similar to what he did against Cotto where he would shoot right away after catching shots on his guard. On top of that, I don't see Canelo struggling to counter in between Golovkin's shots so he'll be more offensive minded.
