Comments Thread For: Canelo's Advantage in Experience Cannot Be Overstated

Despite being the challenger, the disparity in experience cannot be overstated in this fight. Alvarez (47-1-1, 33 KOs) has more than twice as many pro fights, and at age 26, has already taken on the cream of the crop of the 154-pound division.

Good analysis. Smith is a massive underdog and for good reason.
Alvarez is a proven commodity with superior boxing skills, while Smith is an unknown with lots of home cooking on his resume.
Smith needs to withstand the Mexican's early assault and still be fresh enough to test Canelo's questionable stamina in the second half of the fight.
I can't see it happening though, fighting Alvarez is just too much of a step up for this Brit.

      Look at Smith's opposition.

Just four fights ago he was fighting dudes with 11-5 (David Romero) and 10-8 (Robert Talarek) records.

And now he's fighting Canelo Alvarez.

This ain't going to end well for dude.

        .
Please point me to the fights where home cooking played a part in Smith's wins?...

If we're talking about home cooking, Canelo is the one we should be talking about. Somehow managed to have one judge scoring a draw for the Floyd fight where it was basically a shutout. A 118-109 scorecard in a very competitive fight with Trout and a 117–111 scorecard in a fight with Lara that he arguably lost.

Liam Smith was born in Liverpool, lives in Liverpool and has 13 of his wins in Liverpool.
The rest of his fights are all in the UK. That's like Mickey Ward never leaving Massachusetts (now Liam vs Mickey would've been a good fight ).
Smith's has heart but nobody would call him the "Road Warrior".

The definition of home cooking usually means you get gifts and favours because you're the home fighter or it's your promoters card, which he hasn't needed, unlike some fighters.

Of course he isn't a "road warrior" - he's never really had any big opportunities yet and is usually the "A-side" or whatever as they were building him as a prospect in his home city against guys he's supposed to beat, just like most most prospects and Liverpool is quite a major city in the UK so he hasn't really needed to go anywhere else yet.

Not really any different to most prospects on the way up.
