Why Didn't Andre Ward Accept 164, 50/50 when he was the b-side?

I know GGG said 154-168 several years ago just like Ward said he would drop down to 154 for Mayweather. So that is a wash right there.

But at the time, that was a more than fair offer. #1 160 vs #1 168. Meet in the middle. And 50/50 when GGG had higher ratings.

andre willing to go to 160 to fight mayweather. but why not 164 for GGG when GGG is the bigger draw than Ward?

Same reason ggg won't consider 154,155 for canelo. Even with it not being a fight for any titles... Because like Ward, ggg feels he's worth more than to simply accept those concessions from the opposing fighter

They offered him a fight at 164? The only offer I recall is Ward sending them an offer they rejected. They talked 164 in the media but never sent him an offer. They sent Edwin Rodriguez an offer for 164 with a 10lb rehydration clause. That's the only offer for 164 that i recall

“I would love to [fight Gennady], his team and promotional company send me a contract to fight at 164lbs and next day they say I have to be 10lbs off. They go on HBO and say they’re big enough to fight anybody from 154 to 168, after I win this tournament I’m open if you want to fight me. My weight is 168lbs, come and get it.”

Rodriguez explained further that not only was he dissatisfied with the terms of the fight, but he also felt frustrated about the situation in its entirety and even took a stab at what a catch weight could suggest about the confidence in Golovkin and his team.

“Don’t send me a contract saying I have to be 10lbs off or come down to a catch weight, I’m a super middleweight and you said you’d fight anyone from 154 to 168 but then you’re fighting guys at light middleweights. If you’re really as good as you say and your team really believes you’re that good then move up and fight me at 168 and stop sending me contracts that aren’t even worth looking at.”

Let me re-iterate the point, GGG didn't ask for more money. He didn't ask for Ward to come down to his weight.


He asked for FAIR TERMS right in the middle. That is more than fair.
