Oscar fought a great fight and showed the Mayorga that he can punch to. Oscar showed good defensive skills in parrying most of Matorga's wild hooks and picked his punches well not going for the knockout whenever Mayorga showed he was hurt. All in all it was a brilliant performance afetr the long lay off and i hope to see Oscar - PBF where i think Oscar might win if he shows the determination and punching accuracy he displayed last night
Let's not Get TOO Excited about Oscar !

Great performance by De La Hoya. He easily knew how to supress Mayorga's attack with his defence (when a opponent only throws wild overhand rights and swinging left hooks to the body then a fighter with DLH's smarts has got it made) and his counter-punching and handspeed were as good as when he fought Vargas. Clearly, slagging Oscar off before you fight him is the worst thing you can do, because unless he has that sort of motivation he isn't the same fighter. He also showed a great chin because he soaked up that hard Mayorga uppercut in the second like a sponge. His power was good also but when you fight the Nicaraguan Micky Ward then landing shots isn't too much of a problem. Not taking anything away from the excellence of DLH but you have to ask much how the beating Mayorga took from Trinidad out of him.
With skills like that, I think he should take on PBF. He's got the handspeed and power at that weight to give him a lot of trouble. PBF, Calzaghe and DLH are the only people with hands that fast that they use that effectively that I have seen fighting today. There's no way in hell Mayweather would knock out DLH, given the power he has lost to come up in weight again; DLH on the other hand is now a completely natural 154lb-er.
It would be up to DLH to raise his motivation level again because I can't see PBF talking the **** that Mayorga did. I just hope that fight doesn't turn into a tactical stalemate and therefore a complete bore.Last edited by DarkSpyder; 05-07-2006, 09:36 AM.Comment

** The neighborhood dogs dump better analysis on your frontyard everyday. Don't give up your dayjob at the homeless shelter!Originally posted by PeterpI'm a huge Oscar fan and i loved every second of the 6 rounds but let's be realistic. Mayorga whilst a big hitter aint no PBF or Hatten. Mayorga's defensive skills are next to none and he should be picked apart by any truly elite boxer who can avoid his power shots like Oscar did.
If Oscar brings that kinda fire and focus into a fight he is capable of beating anyone but he aint gonna walk over the likes of Hatten or PBF, he will still be a strong underdogComment

Dela Hoya vs. Mayweather can be the biggest lower-weight fight since the Sugar Ray Leonard days.Comment

LOL. Every single one of you guys are hypocrits, 99% of you were bashing Floyd saying how a fight with DLH would be easy and how he needs to fight margarito. Now you're all saying he is going to get his ass kicked all of a sudden? Are you guys ******ed? You're basing this is off of mayorga? MAYORGA? WOW.Comment

Agree with most of this. Mayorga's record, stacked next to DLH's, pretty much is a comparison between mice-and-men in the boxing game.Originally posted by PeterpI'm a huge Oscar fan and i loved every second of the 6 rounds but let's be realistic. Gotta' admit, DLH looked very good against a guy who is a 2nd-tier fighter. To now say he's "back" as your favourite seems a big stretch. Is he your favourite again because he is winning?Originally posted by YamanDe la Hoya is back to being my favorite fighter again.Comment

Oscar took care of Mayorga which is not a surprise, much better boxer all round. Mayorga is a rough brawler type lacking skills. I wouldn't make Oscar the underdog against Hatton, that's laughable, Hatton has a couple of good wins, Oscar has been fighting in world class since '94. Oscar would handle Ricky Hatton alright but ain't gonna be fighting him. Why should De La Hoya fight Hatton? What does he bring to the table for Oscar at this stage? Nothing. This is a business as well. Get over yourselves. Underdog against Floyd yes, against Hatton ha ha er... no.
