Outside vs Mid-Range

I'd agree.. Anyone close enough to touch their opponents glove and hit them with lead rights is mid range...
Mid range guys tend to like to draw counters with feints .....
A mid range hooker is a very different thing thoughComment

To me outside fighting is keeping the opponent on the end of your jab, following with a straight right more often than any other punch. The line is blurred with a lot of guys because they box like that for most of the fight but then will go to mid-range when looking to do the most damage. Golovkin is like that IMO, uses the jab on the outside well, used that style vs Lemieux and a lot of guys for most of the fight. But if you look at how he ends fights it's not normally with the 1-2, he likes to go to mid-range to land the left hook to the head or body. Whereas a purer outside boxer like Wlad does that a lot less and often does the most damage with the straight right hand.
Brook fought well on the outside vs Porter and is strong there, very good jab, reflexes, slips shots well especially as guys come forward. Against Golovkin I think he uses his jab less, he's going to have to get into the danger zone to land his own shots, slip past G's jab, land with power and then step out at and angle and away.
People do seem to see it differently though. Some regard anyone who moves a lot and mostly stays out of range as an outside fighter. But some guys using that style are not looking to land the jab and use it to control distance, they instead stay out of reach and then when they are at jabbing range they close the distance, throw 2-3 shots, and step out again. He didn't exactly pull it off but Cotto's gameplan vs Margarito for instance. I could see Brook trying something like that against Golovkin and if it worked would be down to mid-range offence and being good defensively on the outside.Last edited by Clegg; 09-04-2016, 07:26 PM.Comment

An outside fighter is basically someone who attempts to stay away from the opponents reach until they are ready to throw. Typically a one-two or single straight. They tend to cover a lot of range when they punch because of the distance they like to have. Lara is solely an outside fighter. Nothing fancy just jab and left hand with the distance between him and his opponent being his primary defense.
A mid-range fighter is someone who stays within striking range of their opponent and doesn't mind exchanging punches. They will normally have a tighter guard and use more head movement along with feints so that they don't get caught in the exchanges.Comment
