Comments Thread For: Buatsi on What Floyd Mayweather Told Him, Mulling a Pro Run

British Olympian Joshua Buatsi was impressive during the recent Olympic games in Rio. He walked away with a bronze medal and is now mulling the possibility of turning pro or remaining in the amateurs ranks to chase Olympic gold at the games in Tokyo in 2020.

Be a shame to see him stay amateur for 4 more years, but maybe one more World Championships wouldnt hurt to get some more top level experience.

Staying in olympic style boxing wont reinforce bad habits like it used to, but it is probably more damaging to the body. Its not like the old days where you could get to you late 20's having taken very little wear and tear. These guys take serious punishment over an international tourney.

Personally i reckon turn pro now and strike while the iron is hot. Get the best deal you can.

Maybe it's just me but I don't see the point in remaining in the amateurs four additional years. Who turns down varsity to compete in jv?

I hope he turns over. Could be a KO machine and there is no telling where British boxing will be in 4 years compared to where it is now.

Should sign with Eddie I think.

He is a clever kid though and is gonna complete his degree first.

Definitely Eddie or a PBC affiliate.

Maybe could feature on Al's potential ITV shows. Be a decent way to sell PBC UK

Its only Americans these days who still think the Ams are just a little league for pro boxing.

The pro fighters (inc two recent world champs) were all beaten pretty comfortably and iirc none of them medalled.

Am boxing is just a different sport, but its not 'worse' anymore imo.

Definitely and there could be some highlight reel stuff if they match him with boxers who have a tiny bit of ambition themselves.

              Strictly no Latvians!

Let's face it the pros that went to games was past it and not top of crop when was a pro, we seeing now if when boxers stay in Ams to long with GGG he now basically begging for a big time fight at soon to be age of 35 and being waited out so won't be in prime years by Canelo

Well yeah if you a great career in thw pros it makes sense to turn over early that goes without saying.

The point im making is that the Ams are not just a little league for Pro boxing anymore. The skill level of the top guys is extremely high and also tailered towards the specific rules of Olympic style boxing. These arent teenagers and goat herders, these are full time athletes, mostly training in well funded facilities and pulling in good money.

The idea that pros are inherently better and would dominate in am boxing is outdated.

It's still the land of 3 round fights.

The pro game remains a more truer test of a fighter's overall toughness, ability, and stamina.
