Kovalev also isn't a great improviser himself (imo...) but I think he can make something unexpected by a higher chance than Golovkin.
Also if you compare the two men's resume Kovalev's is easily stronger. When Kovalev faces the level of competition Golovkin usually faces he usually looks just as confident. Only difference that he could prove himself and looked confident against higher level opponents too.
Really the only things Golovkin has over Kovalev is hype and that he is more polished based on the "eye test" but that's really all...
