I think Leonard and Mosley are the only two who truly lived up to it and deserved it.

I honestly think Roy Jones should have been a "Sugar" considering how athletically ahead of his contemporaries he was.....Robinson was throwing combos and making swift moves many fans never saw before, and Jones did the same after

Sugar was always one of my favorite boxing nicknames.
Mosley deserved the moniker. Seales came up a little short, but I wouldn't trash him for it. Anyone coming along today has a lot to live up to with Robinson and Leonard. "Sugar" Roy Jones. Lol He definitely deserved it.

I had a ko magazine or ring magazine back in the day after he beat Ruiz.....that said "Sugar Roy"

He definitely deserved it....Roy was special and I feel priveleged to see his rise, summit, but the fall has been cringe worthy....my child hood hero bro...it hurts to see him go out like this

on a brighter note, my gym says he makes random visits and the top amatuers we have actually spar some of his guys from pensacola and alabama......one day when the stars align, It would be nice to get to meet him....if not for him i wouldnt have become a hard core fan...Leonard and Ali made me casuals as a kid watching Espn classic

do you remember "sugar rays hit parade?"

I remember knowing of it, but I can't say I remember watching.

Interesting and not surprising they once called Roy "Sugar." (A friend of mine was a writer for KO magazine back in the eighties, BTW.) It's a damn shame he's elected to fight on, long after his best days are behind him. He was something to behold in his prime.

Shane definetly didnt live up to that name

the other Sugar Rays were levels about him in terms of skills

Mosley and RJJ relied mostly on physical gifts

Leonard and Robinson were physically gifted AND extremely skilled fighters to boot

Jones skills get underrated because casual fans dont understand what they are watching.....what he did was revolutionary and the essence of what bruce lee believed....be formless...be like water

Jones was a olympic medallist with over 100 fights so of course he had the basics down. Yes he broke rules but his reflexes and sense of anticipation allowed him improvise and do things on the fly, see openings and punches the average person didnt see. But for the style he innovated, he did depend on his reflexes, anticipation, and confidence to pull the trigger. Also he could do it all, fight lefty, throw effectively from both sides, head and body combos, one of the best body punchers in his era, and counterpunchers, the man had a high ring iq and skill set...he just sused an unconventional style.

no fighter can accomplish the things he did with just being a supreme athlete...being gifted only gets you so far...skills pay the bills.

Roy did things that the average boxing fan would overlook.

to a certain degree, they all depended on physical gifts....when it was clear Leonard wasnt what he was after the Hagler fights, his performances got gradually worse and he looked out of place.....same for robinson...difference is, robinson had that awesome chin, so did Mosley

all 4 broke rules because of their physical gifts

We have Ishe Smith who's nowhere near those guys and Anthony Smalls had the nickname "sugar ray clay Jones Jr.", one of the Charlos is "hitman" personally i never cared about having to live up to nicknames.

Sugar was a nickname given to Sugary Ray Robinson (walker smith jr)

Walker smith jr got the name Ray Robinson when he borrowed a friends birth certificate to fight in a tournament as an amateur .....the kids name was Ray Robinson and it just stuck with him
