when Ray Robinson (Walker Smith Jr.) was an amatuer, he had a big following...some one said "that fighter is a sweet mover"...i believe one of his handlers replied."sweet as sugar"...it stuck...the rest is history(boxing lore)

the name is bestowed, they didnt name themselves....since Robinson the term is used to classify fighters with certain attributes...good speed, footwork, power, etc.....I.E. sugar shane mosley

Its why "sugar" shane mosley is well... its not "sugar ray" shane mosley.

Also.... never heard of the term.... "sweet as sugar"? that means that your skills are too good etc.

yep...people assumed seales would live up to it considering he won a gold medal in the ams....he did give Hagler a good go though

I think Leonard and Mosley are the only two who truly lived up to it and deserved it.

I honestly think Roy Jones should have been a "Sugar" considering how athletically ahead of his contemporaries he was.....Robinson was throwing combos and making swift moves many fans never saw before, and Jones did the same after
