If only boxing was capable of putting on an event like that

It somehow is able to sell such a dreadful product and convince people they actually enjoy it.
Unfortunately, boxing is run by dinosaurs (Arum) and by shady business men (Haymon) who are utterly clueless in their decisions in the current marketplace, fuelled as they are by either outdated ideas and fear.
Mayweather did untold damage to the sport, and his fight with Pacquiao was the nadir of all his bull****. The sport should be fresher and more vital coming out of his retirement and holding the sport hostage, but Haymon is trying to bury Arum and HBO because he doesn't know how to be successful financially without Floyd.
And as far as Floyd/Pac, you can't generate fans off excitement alone because you are creating the unrealistic expectation that every boxing match will be blood and guts. That has never been the case in boxing history. So Mayweather/Pacquiao is a bloodbath, a few casuals get their dick hard, then tune into other slower paced fights and realize that boxing isn't for them. and they lose their hard on. We saw this in the Tyson era.
Boxing is what it is. There will always be niche group of loyal fans like yourself and I, and every once in a while, there will be a phenom that attracts the casual audience.

boxers and boxing promoters are failing to craft compelling narratives at the moment. or in cases where a narrative naturally exists, they are failing to capitalise on it. the sport is riddled with parasites who are so obsessed with their next pay cheque that they have no interest in or ability to actually build something for the future
dana white creates a narrative, gives it an audience and then provides a satisfying conclusion to it by making the fight happen in a timely manner. obviously there's an element of luck as to whether the fight itself will deliver or be a dud, but if you make enough evenly-matched fights then you are bound to get a fair share of thrillers and people will forget about the duds
i actually hope that boxing "dies" soon because the whole infrastructure needs to be destroyed and rebuilt

UFC is your average joe blogs sport which isn't overpriced, which doesn't have greedy athletes in it trying to manipulate the entire divisions.
As a neutral in all of this I don't care about what a fighter earns especially on the boxing side because 80% of the athletes are being paid way too much in boxing.
Should a fighter be paid well, well yes obviously but you shouldn't be handing them a million or 500 grand to fight a guy who has absolutely no hope and that is exactly what happens in boxing a hell of a lot.

UFC know how to sell, but there are only a couple of guys that can do crazy numbers; Lesnar and McGregor.
Those two guys bring an attention, hype level and interest that few (if any) current combat athletes can match.
Last night had McGregor and it was backed up by a stacked undercard. It was a huge success.

Boxing promoters just don't have anything near the professionalism and media savvy of the UFC organisation. White and the Fertittas took an ugly, damn near unmarketable concept in 'cage fighting' and completely legitimised it through polished & modern presentation.
The sort of garbage top rank and pbc come out with is embarrassing when you compare it to that. PBC did try to change things, but they got more wrong than they got right. Mainly because it was all so fake and manufactured. And rather than solidify the core fanbase's support for the project, they sold us mismatch after mismatch and dragged their feet on the fights people wanted. If they really wanted to signal that they were changing things, they wouldn't have done that.
Ultimately though, the UFC's control over its fighters is what makes all of this possible. Everything else becomes easier because of it. Boxing is forever undermined by petty squabbling and every promoter trying to milk the last dime out of their fighters. Few risks are taken. In the UFC, big names take risky fights and the sport as a whole gets the reward.

Just thinking about the difference between the doc style stuff the UFC has and those heavily edited, overly produced 24/7 or 'all access' shows makes me cringe.

The fighters as a whole don't get rewarded in the ufc tho. The ufc heavyweight champion makes less than Vasyl Lomachenko.
You don't see a problem with that?
Dana white is the only person benefiting
