Lets call it what it is....Ward is protecting his pay day. Wouldn't be the first time this has happened.

Paying people 30k to fight him. How come there is not 20 threads in the forum saying how awful his opponent is this time?

Even less, fight is in California, he takes a huge cut right from his purse because of taxes.

Chaves made 25k$ against Rios. Brand's purse could have been worse.

$850k is still a lot of money for a tune-up that he has literally 0% chance of losing or even being hit hard. it's free money basically

Ward is still milking his Super 6 pedigree...

But after this one, Ward really needs to beat Kovalev in order to continue to represent something in the sport.

that's not how a promotor makes money. a purse is typically an expense for a promotor. most of them don't make a percent. TV fights are bought, the expenses [site fee, purse, are the big ones] are paid, and then the beans get counted up. traditionally the gate would be the major revenue stream, but that has shifted in the advent of premium network boxing.

as for managers in boxing, they earn their pay, especially when you're talking about fighting on HBO with a major player and only earning a 30K purse. handing negotiations and coordinating virtually every aspect of a fighter's career is not easy. you bet your ass his manager earned his 10 grand if he did his due diligence and was qualified. probably busted his ass for months.

this fight has a function, and it's not to please the 5 dudes on bscene who are still mad that kessler got handled by a one armed, green fighter.

it functions to prepare ward for kovalev. that means staying active and injury free. no broken hand. no shoulder problems. not cuts. you need to be 100% to fight sergey kovalev at 175.

... Right: Ward actually "handled" Kessler (and buttheaded him); he didn't beat him...
