Actually, it would be a lose lose.

If he lost, it gives everyone an excuse to downplay him and he wont have the following he currently does.
If he won, absolutely nobody would have gotten into the ring with him. Imagine if he beat Ward in 2015 and then called out Cotto or Canelo. They would have laughed in his face.
