Wasn't Sullivan Barrera a mandatory challenger for Kovalev and didn't Ward fight and beat him?

Yes it's ok for Ward to have another 175 tune-up and second full LHW fight before facing #2 P4P and Unified Light Heavyweight Champion Sergy Kovlaev. There's is a difference between that and Gennady Golovkin defending his Middleweight titles against a Welterweight.

Are you suggesting that if Ward was facing Erislandy Lara while Golovkin was facing James DeGale, you wouldn't be criticizing Ward?

How can he have a signed confirmed date with Kovalev when he's fighting someone else next?

Kathy Duva of Main Events, who promote Kovalev, had previously stated the pair had agreed to fight and Sergey’s manager, Egis Klimas, confirmed to Boxing News that the superfight is signed.

“The contract has been signed between Kovalev vs Ward. They both have one more fight before they meet, Sergey will fight [Isaac] Chilemba on July 11, not sure when and where Andre will fight,” he said.

“If everything will go as planned they should meet November 19.”

The Kovalev-Ward fight, which was signed long ago but is contingent on each remaining undefeated through interim bouts, will take place Nov. 19 (HBO PPV) at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. (Dan Rafael, ESPN)

GGG wouldn't sign a contract agreeing to fight Ward, on Ward's terms, after Ward had finished his tune-ups, so GGG is a duck, his fans are all racists and Abel Sanchez is a liar etc etc ...

Is it getting harder to defend g string? Kicking 35 in the arse and not one quality opponent yet and no concrete plans to fight one!

Golovkin is no coward but his team is well aware that Andre Ward is 2 to 3 steps above anyone they have faced and anyone they will face. Based on that risk assessment, they will avoid Ward at all costs. Like another poster stated, a loss to Ward is more than just a blemish on Triple G's record. A loss to Ward not only destroys the image of invincibility that they have built for Golovkin with sub-par opposition, it also destroys any hope they have of making him a boxing superstar in the limited time they have left.

I think Golovkin would've fought whoever his team told him to. In my opinion, they didn't want Golovkin's aura of invincibility to be ruined. Unfortunately, sometimes when you're hyped up as an indestructible force of nature and lose, you're completely written off as a nobody. Two examples-- Edison Miranda and Matthysse. Miranda especially, he was hyped up to the point of the absurdity and when he got his ass kicked by Pavlik, that was pretty much it. Nobody gave a crap about him anymore.

Now I'm not saying that Ward would've destroyed Golovkin, but I think he would have decisively beaten him by UD, and then people would write Golovkin off as a "hype job" even though losing to Ward is nothing to be ashamed about since he is one of the best fighters in the world. I don't buy into this "Lil' G be a scurred ass coward doe!" nonsense.

That's my two cents on the subject.

I don't think Ward can make 168 anymore. I would love to see the fight, but at what weight. I think anything above 168 would be too much to ask from GGG.

But let us see what happens on November.

Hopkins went straight from 160 to 175 and beat the light heavyweight champion. So it has been done before

If is a big word! Ward vs Kovalev cannot be finalised and the contract for that fight signed till Ward has beaten Brand. What has been signed is a contract agreeing to work towards the fight happening "if everything goes as planned"

But will everything go as planned? We'll have to wait and see about that.

Just turned 34 actually. 35 - 0, 3 world titles, trying to make fights with all the top men in his division and with KO wins over 7 top ten ranked opponents in the last 4 years.

Beats me why you think a fighter like GGG needs defending by anyone.
