Last month, former two division world champion Mikey Garcia (34-0, 28 KOs), 28-years-old, officially announced his return to the ring. Garcia has been out of action since January 2014, when he won a unanimous decision over Juan Carlos Burgos at The Theater in Madison Square Garden.

It's never a good look leaving your promoter just because you were asked to fight a guy like Gamboa.

I can totally understand Garcia not wanting to sign an extension & I can understand to an extent Garcia not wanting less than Crawford was offered to fight Gamboa. What bothers me as a fan though is Garcia was not making weight at 126 (un-professional) then he moves up to 130 and is getting caught and knocked down by inferior opponent then he wanted to move up to 135 to fight Gamboa? To me it doesnt seem like Garcia is 100% mentally in the boxing game and if he was getting knocked down by 130lbers he might get put to sleep at 140+. He has skill but he is somewhat robotic and isnt that fast & I can only see him being slower at a higher weight, I dont think Garcia has the frame to fight higher than 135 but knowing the Garcia gym he will probably fight above his size and probably still not make the contracted weight.

My recollection of the Garcia vs. Gamboa negotiations differs at least from reports at the time. Top Rank seemed to blame Gamboa for making demands and pricing himself out of the match. When that fight fell through, Arum was attempting to make a Garcia Vs. Uchiyama fight. I even ran into both Mikey and Uchiyama at the Canelo-Lara fight. I asked Mikey if he was going to fight Uchiyama and he blew it off. The "official" word from Top Rank was that HBO didn't want to air the fight and Arum then had to make the fight without HBO. I think TopRank were just trying to protect Garcia at the time because looking back it seems more that he wasn't that interested in fighting. What I'd really like to know is what did Cameron Dunkin think at the time? I've never seen an article about Dunkin's views about what happened. I would think what he says would be closer to the truth then what Garcia or Arum says. My opinion about Garcia and his money demands was that TopRank and HBO did a real good job at "Building the product" and putting Mikey in decent fights but for whatever reason that didn't translate in good ratings and large crowds at his fights. We will see if Mayweather overpaid for a guy who hasn't fought in 2.5 years and was getting knocked down by guys who weren't in his league.

I was listening to Mikey on a podcast (Lukie Boxing) a week or two ago that went a lil more in depth than most of the videos I've been seeing with Mikey since he's been "back" & it for sure sounds like the long term plan is some sort of Garcia Family promotion. It does sound like they are looking to piggyback with someone short term contractually or freelancing, but definitely look for the Garcia family to dip their toe in the business & with the long term goal of Mikey fighting for his own promotion.

So basically Todd Deboef told him the reason he needs tue extension is because top rank builds for the long term, and that they wanted a guarantee that they could continue to build the Mikey Garcia brand.

And Mikey somehow takes this as a bad thing?

There is no other promoter/manager in boxing right now builds stars or long term projects.

Haymon/golden boy hasn't built one ppv star from scratch.... EVER! these fighters are fcking ******ed, Mikey had it all, now he lost 2 years and will sign with Haymon and never be a real star. He's going down the road of Santa-Cruz and Chavez Jr.
