I think the economic angle with the decline of boxing in the US has to do with the limited audience its been exposed to over the last several decades. The US population is about ~318M. The main place to watch elite level boxing has been HBO since I've been a fan. Right now HBO has about ~36M subscribers. So the fact only 11% of the population has access to most elite level boxing the boxing fan base was destined to go down. I'm sure if you ran the numbers you'd even see among Mexican-Americans, the most loyal fanbase of boxing in the US, a decline in their watching of boxing even doe it'd not as serious a drop in most other races/nationalities in the US
Definitely agree. Your region plays a part too. I grew up in Michigan (GR region) & boxing is much more popular there than where I am in NY now. I suspect some of that is about the lack of mainstream sports in close proximity to sports fans that might otherwise have been compelled to go to a NFL game over a boxing card if the opportunity was there.
